HELLBOY Concept Artist Unveils Horrifying Interpretations Of MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Characters

Though it seems highly unlikely that these will actually influence the upcoming live-action movie, Hellboy concept artist Paul Gerrard has shared some terrifying takes on the Master of The Universe...

Aside from a couple of blurry concept art shots we still don't really know what to expect from David Goyer's upcoming Masters of The Universe movie, but if he and Sony Pictures wanted to take things down the horror route, they could so a lot worse than using the following character designs as a guideline.

Most of the Master of The Universe villains (and heroes, for that matter) are fairly monstrous-looking at the best of times, but in the hands of Hellboy reboot conceptual designer Paul Gerrard, the likes of Skeletor, Trap-Jaw and Buzz-Off take on truly terrifying new life.

To view the list in its entirety, simply click on the VIEW LIST (ONE PAGE) button below!

Skeletor

Though a couple of He-Man's allies do appear, these images mostly depict the bad guys, and we kick things of with the protector of Eternia's arch nemesis, the delightfully evil Skeletor.

King Hiss

We're not certain which one of the villainous Snakemen this is supposed to be, but the fact that his reptilian visage is hidden behind a humanoid mask means it's most likely the leader, King Hiss.

Skeletor II

This second interpretation of Skeletor doesn't look a million miles away from the classic version of the character with his hood down.

Modulok

The Horde's Modulok is capable of altering his appearance into a variety of twisted forms, but the "evil beast of a thousand bodies" has never looked quite as hideous as he does here.

Man-E-Faces

Though a lot more gruesome, we think this incarnation of Man-E-faces actually looks better than the classic dome-headed take on the cursed, but noble warrior.

Evil-Lyn

There's a definite Eva Green vibe to this take on Skeletor's powerful second-in-command, Evil-Lyn.

Trap Jaw

This terrifying interpretation of Trap Jaw seemingly draws influence from the mass-murdering cyborg that was originally introduced in the comic series, as opposed to the toned-down animated series version.

Buzz-Off

You certainly wouldn't think it to look at him here, but bee-man Buzz-Off is actually a heroic character and serves as He-Man's "spy in the sky."

Skeletor III

We finish up with another couple of incarnations of Skeletor. The first seems to be influenced by Conan creator Robert E. Howard's art, while the second re-imagines the iconic villain as a mummy.

Skeletor IV

What do you guys make of these designs? Would you like to see the upcoming live-action movie take influence from Gerrard's work, or do you think it'd be a bit much for the youngsters?

@HeavyMetal4Life - I always liked the look of the different Cenobites. Wish they would make a halfway decent movie. Maybe a reboot similar to It.

@DAGuess - Yeah, its a cool concept. I watched the first movie and struggled to get through it, it was quite bad. Decided I wasn't going to waste my time struggling through the other films. They should probably reboot it rather than continue to make sequels.

@HeavyMetal4Life - It's certainly an interesting concept and universe.

@DAGuess - Clive Barker was saying a few years ago that he wanted to make a film that explored the cenobites and their culture. But it seems the studios won't go for that.

@Mercwitham0uth - That would be awesome. I'd even settle for a horror anthology on Netflix or Amazon. I really enjoyed Barker's Books of Blood.

@DAGuess - Clive is pretty unique with his stuff. He was also planning on making another franchise and had a story all written out for it. It was based on a toyline that he pitched to Todd McFarlane. Todd of course made the figures but I guess film studios didn't want to make it cause it would've been too weird.

Tortured Souls: Animae Damnatae is the story of six Cenobite-like creatures: Agonistes, a transformer of people into monsters who may be a creation of God; the Scythe-Meister, an assassin created by Agonistes to bring a corrupt empire to its knees; Lucidique, the daughter of a slain senator who is strangely falling in love with the Scythe-Meister; Talisac, a twisted doctor who has impregnated and attached himself to a strange machine; Venal Anatomica, a hulking assassin with an inhuman bloodlust; and Mongroid, Talisac's soon-to-be born child with a huge mouth in his stomach.

I would have loved to have seen that.

@Mercwitham0uth - I vaguely remember that toy line. I think we are on the verge of a horror resurgence at the theaters and on streaming thanks to movies like Get Out and It. Maybe there will be more traction on some Barker projects.

On a somewhat related note, I've heard that Shudder is considering resurrecting Monstervision with Joe Bob Briggs.

Some of these are cool designs that could work on the big screen, but they shouldn't change Skeletor too much from his iconic look.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Maybe it could be a mix of his iconic look with some of Gerrard's creepy concept art of the character to make him look more imposing and intimidating.

HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 2/3/2018, 9:42 AM
@demery - Yes, I agree from the torso down for incorporating the concept art. But the head, and hood, should pretty much stay the same (with them just making the skull look right on screen)

Skeletor 1 & 2 are my fave Skeletor pics but would look much better with his hood. Modulok looks like something Del Toro would create. I’m trying to picture Gerrard’s He-Man but with Hulk Hogan hair🤔.

1987 movie is still a huge guilty pleasure of mine. Cool designs but I think skeletor needs to have his hood at a minimum. I loved the show so much as a kid that I named one of my pets after one of the characters.

MOTU is such an interesting property. I'm surprised no one has really cracked it yet.

I'd rather this read "George Miller's Masters of the Universe"

That second to last image of Skeletor is incredible. Beautiful work.

And while I enjoy seeing these “dark” versions of the characters, I have to agree with others that MOTU needs to be a fun, light-hearted fantasy movie in the same vein as Thor Ragnarok.
Colorful and aimed at kids. I would love to see the entire toy line make a comeback and be as hugely popular as it was in the 80s.
But it can’t do that if it’s some dark gritty movie that alienates kids.

As far as who should play He-Man, it would be awful if Hemsworth took the role. It wouldn’t make any sense. It would basically be Thor again. They need to get somebody new in the role and surround him with great actors just as they did with Christopher Reeve in the first Superman movie.

My biggest fear is that David Goyer is writing and directing this and...ugh...he is very much more miss than hit.

I cannot wait to see He-Man charging into battle riding Battle Cat. Holy shit, that’s going to be mind-blowing...
