2019's HELLBOY Reboot Is Being Released In China This November Despite Flopping At The Global Box Office

Hellboy flopped at the global box office with just over $44 million, but with theaters in China open again, the film is finally being released there next month. Could it earn enough to justify a sequel?

Hellboy was released in theaters last April, and it bombed domestically with $21.9 million. It didn't perform much better overseas with a $22.76 million haul, and thanks to a reported production budget of $50 million, the film was deemed to be a flop (that figure doesn't include marketing and distribution costs).

Critics didn't like Hellboy - it boasts a terrible 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes - and neither did fans, though star David Harbour would later blame the negative response on fans of Guillermo del Toro's films.

Despite all of that, Variety confirms that the plan is for the reboot to be released in China on November 9. There, it will compete with the likes of Digimon Adventure: The Last Evolution Kizuna and Back to the Wharf, two titles likely to be major box office hits in the Middle Kingdom.

If Hellboy was somehow a runaway success in China, there's a chance a sequel could happen.

However, like theaters across the globe, those in China are struggling to bring patrons back. While Hellboy might add a few more million to its current box office total, even that number is somewhat optimistic when the film has been widely available for the better part of a year at this stage.

Honestly, just do Hellboy 3. Bring Guillermo back as a producer if he’s too busy to direct at the very least, hire Scott Derrickson since he’s now officially free, bring Perlman back, end the trilogy with the inclusion of Selma Blair whilst she physically still can.

Harbour was pretty good in it & the art direction was also good, but everything else is all over the place. Whomever thought that using one of the last Hellboy tales for a rookie Hellboy tale is completely bonkers!
There are a bunch of young Hellboy comics in the BPRD series they could have used.

While i loved both Del Toro movies and really like Ron Perlman, the 2019 Hellboy movie was much closer to the comics and rated R.
I went with a friend who is 47 und we both enjoyed it very much.
It was more episodic in nature and it had three storylines which had nothing to do with each other, but the battle with Baba Yaga in her hut was incredible.
We both thought the humor was geared more towards older guys.
I wouldgive it a 7/10 whereas the two previous ones were 10/10.
