Ghostbusters: Afterlife is now in theaters (you can check out our review here), and while it's common knowledge that Jason Reitman's sequel features the long-awaited return of the original spook-hunting team, a couple of characters fans may not have expected to see also show up in the final act.
Spoilers follow.
The latest trailer all-but gave this away, but the 1984 movie's big bad, Gozer The Gozerian, aka The Destructor, aka The Traveller, aka Volguus Zildrohar, does indeed return to finish what they started towards the end of Afterlife. The genderless deity was played by Yugoslavian actress Slavitza Jovan in the first film, but Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy, A Vigilante) steps into "flattop's" sparkly heels this time for a memorable extended cameo.
Far less memorable is the rather pointless addition of Ivo Shandor, the Cult of Gozer leader who designed and constructed Dana Barrett's building ("Spook Central") in the original movie and the entire town of Summerville in Afterlife. The kids find him preserved in a coffin in the old mine, and he awakens when Gozer emerges only to be immediately torn in half by his master. The character is played by none other than J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Zack Snyder's Justice League).
