To all the sound geeks out there, Jon has spoken! This was posted on his Twitter account Sunday:

Spoiler for sound geeks: The Wilhelm Scream is in.
10:39 AM Mar 21st via Echofon

For those unaware (I was), here is a brief condensed history courtesy of LA Times:

The Wilhelm Scream, originally from a 1951 movie titled Distant Drums, really caught fire with legendary sound supervisor Ben Burtt, who created the sound effects for Star Wars and won Oscars for his work on E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Burtt began using the sound snippet as a kind of calling card and then other sound specialists, as an inside joke, found excuses to sneak it into their projects. Think of it as an old-school Easter egg.

The pained wail has appeared in more than 140 movies, according to Hollywood historian and sound editor Steve Lee, who maintains a list here. Among the films: Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Batman Returns, Reservoir Dogs, Toy Story, Spider-Man, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Hellboy and Poltergeist.

From the sound of his recent tweets, Jon is in the home stretch polishing the score, sound and visual effects for IM2. Favreau also used The Wilhelm Scream in Iron Man. A giant no-prize to the first one who can say where that was.

I thought I was in the dark about this but after watching the clip compilation I realized that that scream always makes me laugh. Reminds of a Tom and Jerry type scream.

And all this time I thought that every movie that used that scream stole it from star wars.

For years this has been plaguing me. I knew I kept hearing the same scream in different movies... I even speculated that it was a stock soundbite at Skywalker Ranch, but I never knew it had a name! AAAEOW!!

this kind of reminds me of that terrible female scream that gets used in a lot of movies. although the female scream is VERY cheap sounding and you can pick it out in EVERY movie its in. i HATE when movies use it because it cheapens the whole thing. they couldn't get someone female to scream into a microphone? they have to keep using that same, horrible scream?

but knowing THIS one is an inside joke, i think its funny. especially since this one doesn't sound quite as cheap, or noticeable.

@Kirbymaniac-You win a giant CBM no prize!! You are correct, it was when the original Iron Man comes out of the cave with the flamethrowers.

Now I gotta watch Reservoir Dogs again to find it. Is it Marvin the cop getting his ear removed or Tim Roth in the car? Maybe something smaller? I'm stupidly intrigued.

@ManOfIron: That scream instantly made me think of Star Wars everything. There's also a sound effect in Star Craft that's made its way into everything. I can't think of it right now though.

That scream is great lol I remember the movie where I personally first heard it. Star Wars: A New Hope. The scream just stuck with me as soon as I heard it, and when I started to hear it in other movies, I'd go to myself, "Hey, it's that scream from Star Wars! Awesome!" lol Of course, later in my teenage years, I found out that it's a popular scream that's in almost everything, from TV shows, to movies, to video games lol I think I even heard it in a commercial once.
