Jon Favreau On Not Directing IRON MAN 3

Jon Favreau On Not Directing IRON MAN 3

The Iron Man and Iron Man 2 director relates his experience as a prime example of what it means to be a filmmaker in today's age. "The biggest contribution is when you come in and discover that cast, you find the right pitch for the show and then you create the world..."

"When you first walk on to the set it is strange. To see all my friends and my cast members there but Shane [Black] is someone who I've known for a while and Robert [Downey Jr.] knows for a very long time and I've done two, back-to-back. It's weird being on that set as an actor and producer and it's a little surreal, it feels like a dream. It's like when you go back to your old school in your dream or something. But I have to say, I've had so much fun and Shane's doing such a fantastic job. And I'm sort of getting used to the idea, having watched Robert on screen in The Avengers and having just been an executive producer on that, not directing. I've become comfortable with it and actually it was good set-up and preparation for Revolution because now I'm watching dallies of scenes directed by other directors with the same characters that I just worked with. So, I think that's part of what it means to be a filmmaker now. Whether you're dealing with pilots or franchises, the biggest contribution is when you come in and discover that cast, you find the right pitch for the show and then you create the world and hopefully other creative people can come in and build upon that. That's been very rewarding, so it's more like being a proud grandfather where you get to play with the baby but you don't have to change the diapers."

At one point in time Favreau was set to direct not only Iron Man 3 but The Avengers as well. You can only imagine the internal discourse that took place as he watched the massive success of The Avengers skyrocket Joss Whedon's profile and sees the buzz build for a third Iron Man film touted as reinvigorating the franchise he created. He may not be getting a lot of the recognition now but as the director stated, the tone, actor and characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have all more or less developed from the world he created in the first Iron Man film.

Iron Man 2 is a really good film, it's just that Whiplash should have been Bane/ Joker-style destructive. Rourke would have played that really well but instead he ended up being easily disposable and forgettable

Iron Man 2 wasn't as good as the first, but it was still a very enjoyable movie. Iron Man 1 was damn near a perfect iron man movie, it can be tough to top that movie while also being responsible for opening the door for avengers.

iron man is a classic & the second best comic book movie ever, the avengers is the best.

as for iron man 2,its good but nowhere near as good as the first film & i think its the worse marvel studios film to date.

1st the avengers 4/5
2nd iron man 4/5
3rd captain america the first avenger 3.5/5
4th thor 3/5
5th the incredible hulk 3/5
6th iron man 2 3/5

IM2 was crap it just felt like one giant extended scene for IM, Maybe if he wasnt so worried about being in the movie himself he would have focused on a better film. Sam Rockwell was the best part of that film.

Concerning the speculation of deaths in Iron Man 3:

We see Pepper going through some tough shit. But she won't die. If ANYTHING, she'll get the Rescue Armor and help in the fight with War Machine and Iron Man.
Happy however, I think will be annihilated by Radioactive Man. He'll die, and that'll piss of Stark. Having him make the ultimate sacrifice, maybe even a bigger heroic act than in Avengers.

Iron Man 3 looks to be the darkest toned film by MS thus far. I figured Thor 2 would be, given how [frick]ing brutal Thor could be, especially with Alan Taylor helming it. While I know IM3 will have a ton of funny moments, I hope it is extremely dark and depressing. As Joss said, Avengers 2 will be deeper and more personal. I hope it starts here with Part 1 of Phase 2. I hope it is just a depressing massacre that shows you how freaking crazy of a universe the MCU can be. Next week guys, February 3rd, during the Super Bowl, we get more footage!

IM2 was crap! The movie was so boring, I didnt even get it for my collection, even though I got the first one, but that was good and not a joke like the second one.

Lets hope that the third one is an Ironman movie again and not a shit avengers prequel.

He'd be directing Star Wars Ep. 7 if it were up to me.

And to be fair to Favs, we know they forced a lot of stuff down his throat for IM2 and made him rush it as well.

rdj, fiege and justin therioux screwed him over with the dumb script and intense studio interference. favreau should be the next whedon, nolan, snyder. i love rdj but never ever ever let the star of a movie call the shots, it only leads to disaster.

Boekelaar - 1/27/2013, 9:14 AM
The second one suffered from studio interference because they wanted to setup the Avengers. They knew the film would be big given the performance of the first and RDJs comeback so they sacrificed a lot of screen time and money doing all their SHEILD and Avengers initiative moments. It was probably worth it though and movies like Cap and Thor wouldn't have been as big if the general population didn't understand the interconnectivity and it let them all know that the Avengers was coming.

hes awesome for being a good sport about it in public. but in private im sure hes at least a little pissed. this should all be him. but the change was for the better and im sure he understands it now. hes better at being a role player instead of the team leader.

The shared universe was so ambitious that they needed to make a big point of it so that general audiences knew what was going on. One of the films was always going to suffer. I'm glad it was Iron Man 2, in a way because the franchise was so well established in the first one. Had they used Thor or Cap to the same ends, it would have ruined the franchise before it even started. Having said that, I don't think it was the Avengers stuff that ruined it, it was the pointless sub plot with the new element and not enough Mickey Rourke, who put so much effort into that role, only to have the studio cut most of it because it was too dark or edgy. It looks like they've learned, though, and phase 2 looks set to be taking a few risks. I hope it pays off.

Iron Man 2 was nowehere near as bad as people on this site make it out to be. I don't understand why so many people's opinions here are black or white. But anyway, it sucks that Favreau is not up there with Whedon for most people. As awesome as The Avengers was, I still put Iron Man 1 as my favorite Marvel movie. When it comes down to story, Iron Man is easily the best in the Marvel cinematic universe. Iron Man 3 is looking really good. I hope it delivers.

Iron man2 wasnt meant to be the demon in a bottle adaptation. They took a couple elements from it, as well as armor wars. It did a good job of opening the door for avengers, while at the same time developing the iron man character.

Hopefully IM3 is good but I'm just looking forward to it because its a Shane black movie and not because it is an iron man movie

Iron Man 2 was great. Was it as good as Iron Man 1? Hell no. Was it the worst film of the MCU so far? Possibly. But, that does not mean it's good. More so than Iron Man, Thor and Incredible Hulk, it is re-watchable. Seriously, I've seen it more times than any of those. It has so much replay value! Justin Hammer is so fun to watch, Scarlet Johansson's Widow is without-a-doubt the coolest chick ever in a CBM to watch. She's so cool, and she works flawlessly in with the cast, and not to mention the action. Now yes, the last battle was utterly dumb as hell, as was Thor's. The Incredible Hulk remains to have the best final fight of any solo MS film.

Captain America: TFA is still my favorite solo movie because they played it so terrifically smart and set it up for SO many sequels.

Iron Man 3, however, I feel will be the best thing Marvel Studios puts out... That is, before Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier (WOO HOO!), GOTG and Avengers 2 make their debuts. If there is ONE thing Marvel is getting right, it's entertaining their audiences with their diverse films (Everyone's favorite movie is different from the next person), while "1-Upping" their previous movie.

My fellow Marvel Aficionado's, we are in for a treat. Kick back, relax, and rock out with your comics out cause we are gonna Nerdgasm non-stop for the next decade.
