UPDATE: William Sadler's IRON MAN 3 Role And Possible New Details Revealed?

Taken skeptically, it seems yet-to-be-confirmed actor William Sadler's secret role in Marvel and Shane Black's Iron Man 3 may be originated from the comics. Check out who after the jump!

Around the time Iron Man 3 began filming, The Shawshank Redemption actor William Sadler was reportedly spotted on the Wilmington, NC set for a costume fitting. And while we've yet to receive confirmation of that, the questionable, yet occasional reliable, Internet Movie Database may have disclosed his role.

According to IMDB, William Sadler will be portraying Dr. Sal Kennedy in the highly-anticipated Shane Black-directed Iron Man installment. First appearing in The Invincible Iron Man #2, via Marvel Comics Database, Sal Kennedy was a longtime friend of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall).

The trio met at an emergent technolgy conference when Tony was in his early twenties. Sal Kennedy is often sought out by Tony aka Ironman for advice and guidance, aiding him through several crises. The attacked that killed Sall was later revealed to have been arranged by the Mandarin.

Sal Kennedy also appeared in Warren Ellis' Extremis story arc, in which Iron Man 3 is said to be "loosely" based on. However, it's still possible William Sadler won't be portraying Kennedy at all. What do you think?

UPDATE: According to The Playlist' recent Podcast, Sadler will actually play a General in the film, who interacts with Don Cheadle's Col. James Rhodes. The podcast also touches on the potential post-credits scene, among other things. With a possible spoiler warning, read a transcription below with a load of salt!

S.H.I.E.L.D. still has a presence in the film, despite producers saying the story is completely standalone. In regards to how much of a presence they'll have, Marvel is apparently aiming for a similar relationship Agent Phil Coulson had with Iron Man in the first film. Maria Hill will be the connective tissue this time around.

Chinese actor Andy Lau's (who recently dropped out) role is apparently a "very different version of Radioactive Man in the comics." And while he's expected to pop up in future MCU films, he may appear in the post-credits scene. And that will involve him coming face-to-face with a version of Ant-Man.

Edgar Wright will possibly be shooting Iron Man 3's post-credits scene essentially introducing Ant-Man. This may back of Wright stating he was hoping to shoot some of the movie this year.

Anyhow, filming for Iron Man 3 is still well underway in Wilmington, NC. And the crew was apparently spotted earlier today. In addition to Malibu, Miami and China, will Boston, MA also be a setting in the film?

So, I read this really fast, mind you I'm a little drunk, and I thought it said William Shatner. I was about to be totally stoked about this movie.

@Haduken

I just read that too. I still think it will hover around 85% though. It is weird, because normally IGN are the most lenient when it comes to comic book movies.

So I guess I should post about Iron Man 3 so people don't get pissed. Ummm, I normally don't post on these threads because I couldn't give two shits about Iron Man 3. The only Marvel movies I am looking forward to are Black Panther and Avengers 2. The rest I will catch on Blu Ray. I hope it is good for all you fans though.

@NinjaJesus

That is what I am talking about. Normally they are quite lenient when it comes to comic book movies. It's very weird they scored The Amazing Spider-man so low. Oh well, I get to check it out on Friday so I will post my thoughts on it then.

It's almost to bad the already cast Jeff Bridges in the first movie, because Sal is pretty much "The Dude."

@preacher

The studio interfered with Raimi in SPM3.

Nolan has had full freedom with TDKR

Now, I am not stupidly convinced already as I too was sad when SPM3 sucked, but all the chess pieces seem in place

Hmmm idk if I like them drastically changing yet another character. The whole whiplash/crimson dynamo/whatever was totally unnecessary. Why use Radioactive Man if you're going to change him so much that its not even the same character?

Make up a new character to fill the role and then introduce a character in its proper form.

The Mandarin is going to be the Ernest Blofeld of Iron Man. This is a serious move to make this franchise sustainable for decades to come. And.... 3 does not have "too many" villains! We'll probably only see all these villains standing suited up next to The Mandarin in his imperial palace. Tony Stark approaches (think Kill Bill)– then Aldrich Killian rises from the bunch. "He's here for me fellas, calm down. Show him some Chinese hospitality". Smirks. Extremis technology consumes him— Tony knows he's in for a beating when— boom! James [frick]ing Rhodes arrives. This is going to be (for lack of a better word) badass!

I'm glad this film is "loosely" based on Extremis. I don't want Tony's armor to come out of his bone marrow and for his brain to be wired to the internet. Iron Man is more grounded in reality than other CBM's and introducing more fantastical elements would be a mistake.
