JOHN CARTER Takes $500,000 At Midnight Showings

John Carter has opened fairly softly in the US with only $500,000 taken at midnight screenings. However, it's not ALL bad news for the film! Hit the jump for details.

Entertainment Weekly report that John Carter has made an underwhelming $500,000 at midnight showings in the US (this is a figure which has been confirmed by Disney). The studio are hoping that it will be on par with 2010 release Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time which had a similarly soft opening but ended up reaching $30.1 million; a figure Disney would very much like to see the Andrew Stanton helmed sci-fi epic reach. However, it is worth baring in mind that the money taken at midnight screenings isn't necessarily an indication of a film's eventual success. In slightly more positive news, Disney has also announced that John Carter has posted the biggest opening day ever in Russia with an estimated $6.5 million.

STARRING:

Taylor Kitsch as John Carter
Lynn Collins as Dejah Thoris
Willem Dafoe as Tars Tarkas
Thomas Haden Church as Tal Hajus
Dominic West as Sab Than
James Purefoy as Kantos Kan
Mark Strong as Matai Shang
Daryl Sabara as Edgar Rice Burroughs

RELEASE DATE: March 9th, 2012.

Im seeing it tomorrow. Disappointed that it might fail financially however it does seem like a movie that could bring in big numbers outside of North America. Marketing for the film has been hit and miss and so I can't say im too surprised that it isn't making 'huge' numbers. Hope it does well in the long run. Plus I really couldn't care less about critics opinions...the movie looks epic and is sure to be entertaining at least.

John Carter = the new Prince of Persia

Which isn't all bad to be honest, I liked Prince of Persia, but i'm afraid it won't be the blockbuster disney wants it to be.

This has a 50% on RT :(. Damn it Stanton, had a lot of faith in you. Your first bad movie. Stick to animation I guess

Yeah seriously, RT and pretty much every critic on the planet can suck it. If I want to see a movie Ill see it, im not going to let some overly judgmental movie reviewer dictate what I see.

51% critic score on RT, but 72% of viewers rated it positive. Will probably see this with my dad and my sons tomorrow.

Just look at how many of the reviews on ROTTEN TOMATOES mention $250 million!!! A reviewers job is to stay objective, so when I see $250mil in the first line of the review, they lose all credibility IMO.

How can you enjoy a movie if your constantly thinking, "I can't believe this movie cost this much!"?

Most of you guys seem to forget that this is a Disney movie(or "hollywood blockbuster"). And having this in mind, I say, great to watch another "save the freaking princess" plot. It really gets tiring at some point. First half is great though...

Go and watch Goemon for a none routine ending I guess

Gee, after such a peerrfect marketing campaign, who would ever think it would open softly on Midnight screenings? Oh I know, everyone except the people at Disney who designed the terrible campagin itself! The best this film can hope for is that it somehow gets some kind of jolt and holds for two weeks before Hunger Games comes and rips it to small pieces. Nice work Disney, nice work.

This movie was mediocre, but i liked the Lynn Collins chick, she would make a great Wonder Woman.

Yup, seeing Lynn Collins prance around in a gold bikini for two hours is worth the price of admission.

JC had me torn from the moment the credits started to roll.

There were a number of issues that bothered me (things that I knew the critics would tear into, such as the pacing and dialogue), but aspects such as the world design, story/characters and acting made this seem better than certain other Sci-fi blockbusters that have been put out in the past decade or so.

I'm still shocked that this movie cost upwards of $250 million to produce. Disney should've secured their investment by hiring a more recognizable leading man for Carter. Don't get me wrong, I think Kitsch did a serviceable job, but when the entire film's investment is riding on a pair of actors you've only seen in that really bad Wolverine movie, you're probably not going to see it.

I just saw it, the movie is great. It has its flaws just like every other movie, but its a solid sci fi movie. Worth every cent.

Just got back from seeing the movie. 50% from Rottentomatoes is about right. It isn't terrible, but it's kind of a mess. A buddy of mine who hasn't read the books kept saying throughout that it makes no sense.

I wonder if it would have been better if it had been more like the books (the first couple, anyway) and had us follow John Carter solely as he tries to figure out what's going on. Instead it tries to give us all the backstory, and it ends up being all over the place.

What I get is this,1- some clowns had already made up their mind and they want to say they were right so they keep bashing the film and 2- like it was mentioned above some idiots are more worried about the budget than the film.

The film is a great sci/fi fantasy pulp piece of work. If you come on this site as a regular I'd assume that most are into that and if so most will enjoy the film. It was very nicely done all around. If it doesn't make sense to you then blame your schools for turning you into a dummy. The film is easy to follow, plenty of action, humor, some romance and great f/x

Not saying that everyone should love it but too many are just trying to validate their preconceived notions and are full of shit

Well... I was ok with it until I saw Donna's dad from That 70s show in the film. I think the acting was pretty terrible for an epic film such as this. Plus that little prick from Spy Kids who played his nephew was cringing to hear talk.
