JOKER Director Todd Philips Shares A New Image From The Movie; Confirms R-Rating

Director Todd Philips is now putting the finishing touches to his standalone Joker movie, and he's just shared a new image of Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck applying his Clown Prince of Crime face-paint...

The details from the Joker script that leaked online a couple of weeks ago were met with a mixed reaction, but there is still quite a lot of excitement surrounding Todd Philips' intriguing standalone origin story for Batman's most iconic villain.

Now, the director has shared a new still from the film which gives us another look at Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck applying his Joker make-up. The image is accompanied by the caption, "finishing touches," which obviously suggests that Philips has almost completed post-production.

Just in case there was any doubt after that first trailer, Philips has also confirmed that the movie will be rated R, responding to a fan's query with, "It will be rated R. I've been asked this a lot. Just assumed people knew. Sorry."

This is like an incredibly showy role btw. Feels like actor's catnip, but not in the Tom Hardy Venom kind of way... more like Christian Bale in The Fighter or something. Some of the lines are corny, and we'll see how well Phillips lands the tight-rope between sympathy and contempt that the script juggles with, but this does sound like the Joaquin show through and through (he's in all but one scene iirc). As long as this doesn't get terrible reviews I could see Joaquin getting Oscar consideration, unless the year gets way more stacked up in the back-half.

@tmp3 - you think most people give dam about reviews if that where true transformers movie sequels would not have made billion back to back sequels REVIEWS. Do not make movies money it’s people who see them if you want see this movie when it’s out go see it live your life by movie reviews what movie you should see in life’s is something is having mommy daddy tell you what job you should get, what woman you should get married to, how to dress, what car you should buy what food you eat in life use your own judgment people’s have different likes with movies.

Critics and fans like infinity war I did not buy I like end game I have been transformers fan since I was kid transformer movies took people who never fans in transformers made them into fans made transformer popular all over again reviews mean shit your judgment matters is important

Imagine if both RDJ and Joaquin Phoenix get Oscar noms this year...

@WakandanQueen -
There's a chance that the Oscar nominees could be:
Joker (Joker)
Iron Man (Endgame)
Batman (Ford v Ferrari)
Batman (The Lighthouse)
Green Goblin/Vulko (The Lighthouse)
Harley Quinn (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)
Black Widow (Jojo Rabbit)
Kilmonger (Just Mercy)
Nakia (Us)

Maybe Tom Hardy could get nominated for Fonzo, but that's a Josh Trank joint, so unlikely.

@tmp3 - I'm rooting for all of them! However, two actors getting nominated (in the same category) for a comic book character the same year, man that would be [frick]ing epic!

tmp3 - 6/16/2019, 11:04 AM
@WakandanQueen - It'd be Downey Jr. for supporting (since it's an ensemble) while Joaquin would run for lead actor. They do a lot of category fraud to ensure nominations, so even though Downey was the lead they'd run him for supporting; ie Bale will likely be put into supporting actor for Ford/Ferrari, ditto Pitt for Hollywood despite them apparently having roughly the same screen-time as Damon/Leo.

@tmp3 - They will probably submit Downey in the least competitive category.
It just occurred to me that Disney will run so many Oscar campaigns this year.
tmp3
tmp3 - 6/16/2019, 11:13 AM
@WakandanQueen - Yeah, but I have a feeling they'll promote the Fox Searchlight awards campaign crew to oversea all the campaigns, since they've had the midas touch these last few years

@tmp3

Downey's not going to get a nom for Endgame. Don't know if Margot's role in OUATIH is big enough but she has a shot. Joaquin has made it known he doesn't give a shit about Oscars so that could hurt his chances but I think he's probably the most likeliest nab one.

@regularmovieguy - "Don't know if Margot's role in OUATIH is big enough"

Supporting actress is super weak this year. Her, Annette Benning (shit, I should have put Mar-vell on that list) and Scar Jo seem like the best bets for nominations right now.
The thing with Joker is it's the showiest role any male actor has this year, and the Oscars love that shit. Joaquin's nuanced, introverted take as a hitman got no love (despite being [frick]ing fantastic), so now he's going full Bale-in-the-fighter. If Pitt & DiCaprio both go for lead I could see the Joaq slipping out, but I'm expecting Sony to put one in lead and one in supporting.
