JUDGE DREDD Reboot To Be More Authentic Says Executive Producer

While promoting Jason Statham's latest effort, Safe, executive producer Stuart Ford discussed the upcoming Judge Dredd movie starring Karl Urban.

So far, the promotion for Dredd has been virtually non-existent aside from a smattering of magazine stills and interview blips here and there. In the movie business, 5 months is a relatively short period of time and it's a little disconcerting that we have yet to see a clip, trailer or even the dreaded trailer for the trailer. Still, Dredd has a modest budget of $45 million and if it's anywhere near halfway decent I would expect it to avoid posting a huge loss.

Synopsis:The story of Dredd takes place on a fictional Earth created as a result of the Atomic Wars. Survivors of this period are currently living in Mega-Cities, which protects its citizens from the Cursed Earth, a radioactive desert environment populated by mutants. The main story takes place in Mega-City One, where Judge Dredd (Karl Urban), a senior law enforcement officer, teams up with a cadet called Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) to track down a terrorist organization lead by Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), who is responsible for selling a reality-altering drug called Slo-Mo.

Running Time: Unknown
Release Date: 21 September 2012 (USA))
MPAA Rating: Unknown
Starring: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey
Directed by: Pete Travis
Written by: Carlos Ezquerra (characters), Alex Garland (screenplay), John Wagner (characters)

Yeah, I agree with the article. It's five months away and I had completely forgotten this thing exists.

Also, if the shoulder pads and helmet were more like the Stallone version (yes, I know) I'd like the costume better. Everything else is fine.

As a smaller-budget movie, it's quite natural that we're not seeing anywhere near the marketing push for Dredd that we are seeing for the big-budget blockbuster CBM's coming out this summer. The blockbusters get all the attention this time of year. Dredd is going to have a fairly small advertising budget compared to the blockbusters, so why not concentrate most of that effort when the release date draws near? That would be a far wiser usage of limited resources. Face it, we're not going to see cross-merchandising everywhere we look for this film. Better to have the trailer up to run before those blockbusters (probably in mid to late June), and focus the main promotion on the film when it draws near. No need to panic yet.

"5 months is a relatively short period of time and it's a little disconcerting that we have yet to see a clip, trailer or even the dreaded trailer for the trailer. "

Very well expressed. I agree 100 percent.

Judge Dredd is the UK's biggest sci-fi comic book hero. He is our equivalent of Batman, Superman (in terms of iconic appeal). It's sad that DNA Films/Lionsgate (and whoever else is involved) believe zero marketing is the way to get people interested in this film. I think a degree of damage has been done.

There's still time to release some trailers, posters, an official film site but so far it's been very poor. One teaser poster could have given this film some recognition, it would have sent out a message that this film is 'coming in the near future' but even that was too much for the producers.

Check out DNA Films' website:

Shocking! Been like that for almost two years. :(

Just to add...

It's a pity the interviewer didn't ask him "when will we see a trailer?"

"All this viral marketing shit, years before the films comes out, is expensive. I'd rather see them put the money up on the big screen than flushed down the internet."

I dunno about that. You could stick the trailer up on Youtube and it would get hits. No point waiting until July or August to release the trailer on Apple Itunes or Youtube because that's killing off potential interest in the film. I think it's crazy to delay the film's marketing to the last moment. Dredd is a small budget film but it needs some building up of hype.

I think Dredd is destined for smallish box office. The character is too far removed from regular US superheroes. Avengers - Dredd is not! It's a hard sell sort of character. Fascist cop in a brutal sci-fi world. That is not going to appeal to everyone, plus Dredd is R rated.

It worries me that it is in 3D with such a low budget. I hope they haven't compromised too much just to follow the 3D trend. What I've seen so far looks dark and edgy. The last Dredd was toned down both in violence and intelligence probably for the american market. I just hope we get a Robocop style picture both dark gritty film as opposed to a Demolition Man action type movie.

"What I've seen so far looks dark and edgy. "

Not being sarcastic... but what have we seen? About six photos, one of them a side shot of the lawmaster bike. There hasn't been one shot of the city or the main block featured in the film.

No winding people up, what have we seen to suggest this is dark or edgy or even remotely faithful to the comic? Okay, we've seen the uniform but nothing else.

The point remains - there is practically NOTHING out there about this film.

@jimoakley - Just due to the size, really. I know it's quite large in the comics, but so his Dredd's jaw. Urbans just looks too tiny in it and it makes him look a little weaker, IMO. Stallone had a good 'Dredd-ish' jaw on him, but the tighter helmet helped bring it out a little more (for the 15 minutes he wore the thing).

The only problem with Stallone's Dredd was Schneider. Even if Stallone showed his mug more than a faithful adaptation would've allowed him to, his film still rocked. It had Max Von Sydow, Diane Lane and Armand Asante, a decent plot, cool special effects for it's time and a futuristic megacity the way it should look.

Last thing i wanna see is over an hour and a half of a 24/7 knob lookin' helmet sporting "law officer" in a leather jacket, rollin' around in detroit michigan calling it Megacity One.

Wait til two months out, it'll pick up. Most people have the attention span of a fly so two months of heavy trailer and footage oughta do the trick. I am the law!

Karl Urban made me believe a Kentucky doctor could fly in a Star Trek reboot. I have to believe they will tell a better story than Stallone's crapfest, I just hope that it isn't so lacking in acting and effects that it will make me wish Rob Schnieder was in it adding zany comedy.

The original movie actually had really nice art direction, set design, and costumes. They put the money into it and the effects still hold up pretty well today, I thought they captured the 'feel' pretty well. The story/script on the other hand was a complete [frick]ing abortion and ruined it for me. This looks to have a little more promise, despite the questionable choice of uniform. I like the helm, just not sure about the rest. I'm going into it with an open mind hoping they nail the story and dialogue. They do that and I can forgive a few wardrobe malfunctions.

I like Karl Urban as an actor and will give him the benefit of the doubt in this movie, but it seems a bit mis-casting to me. He doesn't have that mean scowl or the jaw to play the Judge.
Hopefully I'm wrong tthough, and he pulls it off.
