Justice League is out now on Digital HD and Blu-ray and, as a result, its run at the worldwide box office is finally at an end. The DC Comics adaptation - which brings together all of the company's most iconic superheroes for the first time in history - has now made a total of $657.9 million worldwide, a notable contrast to what The Avengers made back in 2012 (a far more impressive haul of $1.5 billion).
It's not the first movie set in the DC Films Universe to disappoint financially, however. Man of Steel made only $668 million back in 2013, a decent enough result but one which was widely considered a let down considering the fact it revolved around a hero as popular as Superman. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was widely expected to be a $1+ billion hit but made a total of only $873.6 million.
On the plus side, Wonder Woman massively exceeded expectations with $821.8 million and Suicide Squad was also considered a hit with $746.8 million despite expensive reshoots. What all of this means, though, is that Justice League is the lowest-grossing DC Films movie to date, an embarrassing result for Warner Bros. which goes a long way in explaining why this division is now being shaken up.
It also points to a Justice League sequel being a very long way off, especially as the brand has been tarnished in the same way that Green Lantern was back in 2011. What do you think about this news?
