BOX OFFICE: More Bad News For JUSTICE LEAGUE As The Movie Opened With Less Than Expected
Unfortunately for Justice League, those opening weekend numbers we got yesterday were actually slightly inflated and the movie didn't end up making quite as much as we thought. Read on for details!
Warner Bros. spent an awful lot of money on Justice League but that may have backfired in a huge way this weekend. On Saturday, we heard that the DC Comics adaptation would make $94.5 million over the three days and studio estimates then pointed to it doing $96 million instead. Alas, the movie finished the weekend with $94 million and there's not a chance Warner Bros. will be happy with that.
On the plus side, Justice League had the eighth largest opening of 2017 but here's the kicker; it debuted with less than Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, a movie featuring an obscure cast of characters even hardcore comic book fans weren't necessarily familiar with. Right now, the signs are pointing to the Zack Snyder/Joss Whedon helmed release losing between $50 million - $100 million.
That's a big loss for a superhero movie featuring the likes of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, and the future of the DC Films Universe may be in doubt as a result. On the plus side, Wonder Woman probably showed Warner Bros. that they can find success so there's still hope for some characters at least. Did you guys watch Justice League this weekend?
