Matthew Vaughn Explains Why He May Not Make Kick-Ass 2

Currently basking in the anticipated release of his prequel/reboot (or whatever it is) film X-Men: First Class, director Matthew Vaughn explained why the sequel to his other comic adaption Kick-Ass may never see its way onto the big screen.

BLEEDING COOL recently had a chance to talk to both director Matthew Vaughn and screen writer Jane Goldman while promoting their latest team-up X-Men: First Class (as I write Bleeding Cool has yet to release the full interview). During the chat, the sequel to their cult hit based of the popular comic Kick-Ass was called into question. Unfortunately Vaughn has almost completely disposed of the idea, but with justification as to why:

"Everyone says we’re doing Kick-Ass 2 but… the weird thing about Kick-Ass 2 is I’d love to do it, because I enjoyed it so much, but I’m a big believer that if you’re going to do a sequel it’s got to be as good as the first one if not better. I just don’t know how I could…

My business brain just says do Kick-Ass 2, shoot it and get it out there and it would make a lot of money but I really do love that movie. It was a special moment to me making that film and I don’t want to spoil it. I’m not saying it’s as good as Pulp Fiction but I think it would be weird if Tarantino did Pulp Fiction 2. Everything that made Kick-Ass original and fun, if you do it again, it would be crass…"

I have to agree with Mr Vaughn, creating what is arguably an amazing film to begin with and making a sequel to surpass it without honing the right kind of script would be suicide. Let him enjoy his glory in the sun that he is finally becoming a director that shows what he can do

That's stupid, you don't know if you don't try, and so far the comic Kick-Ass 2 is awesome.

@Dane you can't really take a 'you dont know if you dont try' approach to film making though, it costs a lot of money, and if that money was squandered, then Matt Vaughn could lose all credibility as a director, plus he could ruin people's perception of the first film (much like how X3 and Origins ruined the first two X-Men films and is making people think First Class will bomb).
If he gets an awesome script, a good budget, and the cast can return, then yeah, he should go for it, but only if he is sure it will be better than the first one.
