The Russo Brothers Aren't Done Directing MCU Movies After AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR And AVENGERS 4

With the one-two punch of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 on the horizon, some wonder what's next for the Russo Bros, and in a new interview Joe Russo reveals they're not straying far from Marvel...

Once the currently untitled Avengers 4 hits theatres on 3rd May next year Joe and Anthony Russo will have directed a total of four films for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the most of any director thus far. This coupled with the size of the projects that they've helmed, led some to think that their time with the MCU may be coming to an end if not a brief hiatus.

Speaking with ScreenRant however, Joe Russo revealed that they're still very much in the business of making Marvel movies and that the imminent merger with FOX Studios, that will see the Fantastic Four and X-Men properties return home, have them very excited to continue making movies in this universe:

Joe Russo: Not yet. We love Marvel, that amazing experience with them and Disney. We love comic books. We love telling these stories. Obviously, the Fox / Disney mergers are incredibly exciting to us as comic book fans. We’re just trying to get Avengers 4 done and then, you know, we’d love to work with those guys again.

This will obviously please fans, especially considering that both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War are two of the highest regarded films in the franchise and anticipation for Avengers: Infinity War is at unfathomable levels.

Let's just hope that by the time production wraps on Avengers 4 the duo aren't burnt out ala Joss Whedon with Age of Ultron and don't have some of that excitement tempered. Fingers crossed.

What do you think? Are you excited to see further MCU films from the Russo Bros? Or would you rather some new blood? What project would you like to see the pair tackle next? Leave your thoughts below.

[frick] yeah! Let these guys make whatever the hell they want, these guys seem to have a good grasp on pretty much every character they’ve handled so far

Unpopular opinion: I want them to move on

I like the Russo brothers a lot but I rather see them do some other films & more original work

I also like to see the MCU find another talented hitmaker they could pass the torch that the Russo brothers got from Whedon

I mean I’m fine with them making more marvel films but I rather see them go out on top after Avengers 4.

@LEVITIKUZ - they've teamed up with markus and mcfeely on 2 sci fi features comimg up. Russos are doimg a lot of producing.

I'd love to see them scratch that original work itch too.

@LEVITIKUZ - I too would be interest in seeing what kinds of original projects they could come up with, but if Infinity War and Avengers 4 are satisfying, I certainly won't be voting to push them out the door. Maybe they hand off the Avengers franchise and do a Bucky as Cap movie (if that's in the cards).

@LEVITIKUZ - Let Feige keep scouting for new talent, but there's no reason for the Russos to walk away "on top" or otherwise.

The Bulls didn't say to Michael Jordan "thanks for four basketball medals, but it's time for you to go play for another team". (I don't know how basketball works.)

The point is: if they've got ideas and the desire to stay, they should have an open invitation. Just like the other directors that clearly mesh well with Marvel Studios.

@Spock0Clock - There are so many issues with your analogy as a basketball fan

MJ has a contract with the bulls. Plus after the first 3 peat. MJ retired then came back for a second 3peat which after he retired for good. He didn’t win 4 in a row. There’s a 2 year gap between championship 3 & 4 in which the Houston Rockets won those 2 championships MJ was retired for.

If anything, you strength my argument in the Russo going away from the MCU taking a break or them going out on top

Plus in basketball, you get to the age of 35 & your game goes down

Ridley Scott is 79 & put out 2 films last year

@LEVITIKUZ - Ehm, MJ came back a second time.

Us basketball fans tend to not talk about that comeback, but it did happen.

Considering what we've gotten so far with Winter Soldier and Civil War... they have my support so far.

Let's try and go 3 for 3 this week gentlemen!

They're playing coy obviously they'll be killed off in infinity wars. No one makes it out of these stakes.

The Russos directing a Craig Kyle, Greg Johnson, and Chris Yost X-Men script?

Um... I think I just put a dent in the underside of my desk.

Love what the Russos have done with Marvel but I want to see what else they can bring, either to original projects or existing franchises.

Imagine the Russo Brothers on Star Wars

Or to James Bond

@ELAYEM - Meh. These franchises are boring nowadays. Id rather them stick to the MCU or do something completely original.

I love these guys and I love everything they've done with Marvel so far, and I'd love for them to keep making more movies together. But given how big Infinity War and Avengers are bound to be, I'd suggest maybe taking a quick break and making another movie before they come back for more (possible a Community movie?).

You got my support Russos, whether be with Marvel, superheroes, sci-fi/fantasy, any other franchise or original ideas you can come up with and put it on a film, you both earned my trust and love for what you do. I'll be always be looking forward to you two pair of crazy geniuses.

I Think that this is fantastic news actually... I feel like too often in Hollywood, directors usually try veer away from whatever universes they’ve played in order to come off more versatile... but when you’re damn near masterful at it, I say keep at it Russos
