Mortal Kombat: Rebirth is a 2010 action short film directed by Kevin Tancharoen with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall who also choreographed the recent Undisputed III: Redemption. Based on the Mortal Kombat series of fighting games, the short-film "actually was made by the director to sell Warner Bros. on his vision for a reimagined Mortal Kombat film."

On January 14, 2011, it was announced that an official 10-episode web mini-series based on the short had been greenlit by Warner Bros. The series will be written by Kevin Tancharoen and Spartacus: Blood and Sand writers Todd Helbing and Aaron Helbing, with Tancharoen directing. Michael Jai White will reprise his role as Jax. Shooting is scheduled to begin in Vancouver in February. Characters that are rumored to be included from the Mortal Kombat franchise are Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana, Mileena and Scorpion.

JAX : Michael Jai White

A captain in the Deacon City Police Department. On his office door at the beginning of the film, the last two letters of his first name are faded, thus reading as "Jacks", a nod to "Jax".

SONYA BLADE : Jeri Ryan

In this film she is an FBI agent who is working with The Deacon Police to bring down Shang Tsung.

SCORPION : Ian Anthony Dale

The top assassin of the Shirai Ryu who offered himself up to the police for killing the man he thought was his nemesis. In keeping with the video game series, his eyes are completely white and his signature spear weapon also appears. His trademark battle-cry ("Get over here") can also be heard at the ending.

SUB-ZERO : Joe Odagiri (fan-casted)

Sub-Zero's face appears in a flash sequence as Scorpion looks at the Intelligence photos.

REPTILE : Richard Dorton

A mass-murderer born with a rare genetic disorder, "harlequin type ichthyosis", in which his skin produces too many cells and his eyes are formed inside out. It is said he likes to devour the heads of his victims, which is a nod to his "Head Eat" Fatality from the video game series

BARAKA : Lateef Crowder

A plastic surgeon who, after accidentally killing a patient, went on to kill two dozen more. Faced with the shame of being labeled a failed doctor, Zane pierced his face, sharpened his teeth, and surgically attached a pair of metal blades to his forearms. In a short flashback, he fights Johnny Cage, finally decapitating him with his arm blades.

SHANG TSUNG : James Lew

Shang Tsung who is seen in the photograph on the YouTube video's primary image preview. He is the TRIAD boss who is creating an underground death tournament.

(This is where I go into the Fancasting for the series and movie.)

STRYKER : Randy Couture

A policeman resembling Stryker is briefly seen in the REBIRTH vid. So im guessing they are going to fit him in somewhere. Maybe a rogue SWAT agent who seeks retribution from one of the combatants in the Tournament. Maybe Kabal?

KABAL : Ray Park

Im seeing Kabal as being some sort of Sado Masochistic murderer. Like "Machine" was in "8MM".

KITANA : Maggie Q

I can see Kitana being YAKUZA Royalty who turns over to the FBI as an informant.

MILEENA : Devon Aoki

Mileena is supposed to appear... Im seeing her as a YAKUZA assassin who is targeting Kitana by another Family. *Metal Teeth a must*

RAIDEN : Luke Goss

This is where I want things to get Metaphysical.. Raiden being a spirit in mortal form who is countering Shang Tsung's satanic ways with his Shaolin agents Liu Kang and Kung Lao.

LIU KANG : John Foo

A Shaolin monk who gets the call by Raiden during deep meditation to confront Tsung and end his evil on earth.. a Nemesis if you will.

KUNG LAO : Tony Ja

A former Shaolin monk who joined the Chinese Triad as an enforcer, distant relative of Liu Kang. he also gets the call by Raiden to find redemption and regain his honor by aiding Liu Kang in his quest to kill Shang Tsung.

DURAK : Nathan Jones

Durak is Goro's brother in the game and really isn't referred to all that much, which is surprising he has been considred to play a part in "Rebirth"..In any case, Goro/Durak should be some genetic experiment that escaped from it's facility and makes it to the city.

NOOB SAIBOT : Lee Byung Hun

Noob can be some mysterious Ninja or spy in the series.. doing the recon for a shadowy player behind the scene Cough*Shao Khan*Cough.. Save him as a character only for a few cameos or referances until a possible sequel.

Ok, tell me what you think... any ideas will be appreciated.

@CanadaMan - What I was wondering was if the Scorpion King was better this time around or is the Rock's version still the best.

Love it! You've got some pretty good ideas for where they might take these characters, I'm still in favor of a more fanatsy based film though, mainly because I wrote my own script for MK set in that tone. Liking the cast, although I would have liked a casting of Sub-Zero...

I liked the whole idea of this new take on mortal kombat can't wait for the series and some great picks but they really have to find a way to tie the mystical stuff in some how, i mean I like the gritty and realisic take but MK has so much mystical crap going on so some of it should be included.Any ways great job keep it up

Hopefully - provided the films created - they continue to explore the Scorpion/Sub-Zero relationship.
