In an interview with Vulture Cobie Smulders seems to reveal a major spoiler, which is that her character will have superpowers. This is news to me, and at first I thought it was just a typo. If it's not a typo than this is a major departure from the comic book character. In the Marvel universe she has never had any superpowers. This is the first possible sign that Joss Whedon is tinkering with the Marvel universe, and I'm interested to see how the fans react.

What follows is an excerpt from Cobie Smulders interview with nymag.com
You're also getting into action with Joss Whedon's The Avengers. Before he cast you in that, he said he was considering you for a Wonder Woman project. So he’s clearly a fan. Did he ever tell you why?

No! If he did, I would throw up in my mouth. I mean, the Wonder Woman thing was a very kind comment, I think. I was never in touch with studios about it or anything like that. But we had so much fun shooting [The Avengers]. We had days when it was just us working — and, oh, 200 extras — but, you know, in the inner circle, it was nice to sit by the monitor with him and watch him take on this ginormous project with great ease.

You’re not a superhero in the movie, but you do have sick costumes?

I do. They’re very sleek, and very leather.

And she has superpowers and is hyperintelligent;

a very nice, fine woman who has all the answers.

Sounds like this role might turn you into the sexy-brunette-vixen type.

You know, fingers crossed! If I can be seen as somewhat sexual, if only to my fiancé, after having a child and turning 30, I will be happy for us.

Hmmm...I'm going to guess its either

1) She's actually an alien.

2) They're borrowing from another character like Daisy Johnson, or something. Maybe even Spider-woman! That would be crazy, but maybe the movie rights for Spider-woman are tied up with Spider-man's and this is Marvel's way of getting around it!

Shes supposed to be a normal human, second in command of SHIELD, and hooks up with Tony Stark!!! LOL.

What is Joss Whedon doing??? Gotta stick with the comics. If he wanted a female shield agent to have powers he should have picked Carol Denvars(Ms Marvel).

She will be badass in the movie, cant wait!!!

I've a feeling Whedon has merged Maria with another SHIELD agent who happen to have powers as well

I think perhaps she kinda misspoke about the super powers because earlier she stated she didn't have that much action. to the point where they didn't get her an "action trainer" But then she did have a stunt women so .....
Perhaps shes a Skrull, naw too hot. maybe there gonna make her a MS. Marvel type...No they said no more cameos? Ok she probable misspoke.
Is alright shes cute.
Teabag hush.

She's an alien. Pretty sure of that.

And she was clearly making an allusion to her intelligence.

For all we know she may consider her high intellect as a "superpower". Not sure I am going to take what she said literally. For now, I am not going to read into it that much.

Actually she's been captured or killed by the aliens, who were using a doppelganger to get information.

Seriously? Unless she's a Skrull (which I'd be surprised at), then I'd find her having superpowers to be pretty impossible.

Oh, and I think she'd be a great Wonder Woman. Her or Jaimie Alexander.

She has to be joking. I'm sure her screentime is going to be about five to seven minutes, max. Highly unlikely they'll have her displaying a "superpower" during that brief section.

Why she and Black Widow are in there without Ms. Marvel, i'll never understand. I hope they both kick the bucket and make way for Carol Danvers.

AC1

I think she just phrased it badly, and that her power is this hyperintelligence thing. Probably something like being an amazing tactician and weapons expert, among other things. She may end up being the Avengers' answer to Professor X or Oracle? Who knows...
Anyway, I know Joss enjoys empowering women in his films, but I doubt Maria Hill will have a huge role in this.

meh - she's okay. Her superpowers probably have to do with seduction ...
Dedpool
Dedpool - 12/5/2011, 12:33 PM
Hmms either she's hyper intelligent and that's her supr power, or they may be mixing her character with Quake from "Secret War" and "Secret Warriors" who will be joinging the New Avengers soon.

iI think it's just a mistake.
Remember when everyone said Justin Hammer was going to have an armor.
I think it's somewhat like that.
she probably means Maria is superskilled.
