BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Takes $35.5M On Friday; $90+M Weekend Expected

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took a little less than expected yesterday, but it's believed that the Marc Webb helmed sequel will still earn upwards of $90 million this weekend. However, that all depends on how well it does today, and its debut in China could ultimately prove to be far more important...

We have a box office update on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for you today, with a confirmed Friday haul of $35.5 million. That puts it on track for a weekend debut of anywhere between $90 million to $92 million, with $94+ million possible depending on whether moviegoers flock to go and see it today. Sony are apparently quite anxious to see how well the sequel performs, especially with a long running time and a whopping budget of $225 million (as well as around $190 million spent on marketing). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has only two weekends to make a mark in North America before Godzilla stomps into theaters. It's difficult to compare The Amazing Spider-Man's debut with this follow-up as the reboot opened ahead of the July 4th holiday. In 2002, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man opened to $114.8 million on the same May weekend and ended up with $403.7 million in total compared to The Amazing Spider-Man's $262 million. However, all eyes are on China where the sequel opens tomorrow. With so much spent on the sequel, the studio are hoping that it can make its numbers up overseas in order to at least gross the same worldwide as 2012's instalment.

@Charlie2094

Yeah I said the same. I think spidey will come very close to 800 million after it hits the foreign markets but I think Transformers has the better shot of grabbing 1billion. It all depends on how well they advertise it and promote it. It's going to be a huge summer for sure.

Wait it's gonna open less than Cap 2? What?:o

Releasing this after the masterpiece of cap 2 really changed peoples opinions on cbm's. It was great, but nowhere near the level of cap 2.

The best comparison is really how TASM2 compares to TASM, and it's going to be 30% ahead on opening weekend. That's very good. Cap was an unusually high opening (for a Cap movie), but that's because it was an unusually good movie. TASM2 is splitting audiences - many love it, many don't. Haven't seen it yet myself...

How exactly is TASM2 doing better financially than CAP2 supposed to break hearts @JoeMomma29 ? I'm really not understanding your logic.

I was 50/50 on it. I don't enjoy Garfield's Peter, I just don't. He's too jittery, can't talk straight without mumbling, and too hipster. Give me the classic Peter that shined from the 60s to the 90s.

Goblin was scary and I look forward to him in the next films.

At this point I'm just looking forward to seeing the villains. That's pretty sad, when you don't like the hero.

But hell, it's all about the villains sometimes.

The movie is not as bad as everyone has been saying. It IS convoluted and their are more than a few awkward scenes, but overall it has a good 1st act, a mediocre and confused second act and a great, and i mean great, final act. If you are a fan of spidey and don't mind a little extra fat and cheese, it's worth the ride. 7/10 for me.

This movie made me a MUCH bigger Spider-man fan. I'm starting to take back what I said about the reboot (too soon, unnecessary, too dark, etc). I LOVE this Spidey-verse their putting together. Really really fun and well put together movie.

Has it been confirmed that the sinister six will show up in TASM 3?
ComicFan523
ComicFan523 - 5/3/2014, 8:20 AM
To me this movie was more about Peter Parker than Spider-Man, which is fine. I think they're trying to portray him as something of a tortured soul. His uncle died because he didn't stop the killer from robbing that convenience store and now with what happened in this movie... Seems like his portrayal is pretty accurate with the comics for the most part.
XelCorp
XelCorp - 5/3/2014, 8:20 AM
Or are they being introduced in their own film first? I thought I read that somewhere. If they are in ASM3 then I suggest people start getting use to the whole ""too many things going on/too many characters"" thing
Mashpataters

@Marvel997

the movie had a few flaws, some awkward/cheesy dialogue...and then the people that wanted to hate on the movie before they saw it took that as a confirming answer that it was complete horse-shit for some reason. that's how it always happens. It happened with Man of Steel too.

I agree with you though, I thought it was pretty great and the final act was absolutely spectacular.
