10 PERFECT CASTINGS IN COMIC BOOK MOVIES

10 PERFECT CASTINGS IN COMIC BOOK MOVIES

It doesn't get better than these choices

Movies are such an organic thing. Comic books not so much. A film can be shaped and change throughout production by directors, writers, producers, and even what individual actors do with the role. But comics are much more finite. For the most part, a character is who a character is. Throughout the decades. Only the stories change. You would think such laid-out groundwork would be easy for big screen adaptations. Nope. A lot of the time, comic character and accuracy are sacrificed for a big name star, budget restraints or simple narrow-minded thinking.

There have been a lot of great comic castings. Hugh Jackman is an awesome Wolverine. But is he "perfect?" The dude's a 6-foot pretty boy, not short, feral grunt. Tomas Jane as The Punisher? Really? Jennifer Garner can't be Elektra! Why is Liv Tyler in a Hulk movie? Face it. We always have our own choices. And the fact is, in the world of acting, there is always someone who could can do better. Well, except for these:

I present my MOST PERFECT CASTING in COMIC BOOK MOVIES
(No, Catwoman's not on it)

10. CHRIS EVANS as The Human Torch (The Fantastic Four)

Say what you will about the Fantastic Four movies, but there was one thing they completely nailed: Johnny Storm. The young, brash hothead of the team (pun intended) was perfectly portrayed by the easy-going Chris Evans. Macking on girls or just nailing the teasing dynamic between The Thing (Michael Chiklis is also great as Ben Grimm) , Evans was a better fit here than in Captain America.

9. CHLOE GRACE MORETZ as Hit-Girl (Kick-Ass)

Try finding another little girl that could have pulled this off. Ignoring the cosmetic change of costume, and the actual toned down brutality, from comic to film, there’s a reason Chloe became buzz-worthy after Kick-Ass. She nails the balance between innocent child, and efficient super-killer. She steals all her scenes, and for some fans, the entire movie.

8. RON PEARLMAN as Hellboy (Hellboy)

Talk about born to play the role! Pearlman’s rocky mug alone is enough to make it hard to imagine someone else throwing on the red prosthetics. Guillermo Del Toro proved he knew what he was doing with this choice (and Doug Jones’ Abe Sapien) and brought the characters to life better than any of the readers could have ever imagined.

7. JACKIE EARL HALEY as Rorschach (Watchmen)

“The world will look up and shout, ‘save us!’ And I’ll look down and whisper, ‘no’”. For the gravelly voice alone, Haley has put on a performance that almost can’t be topped. Of the entire Watchmen cast, no one was a better fit. Consider the extra mile: In the comics, Walter Kovacs is described as “fascinatingly ugly” and no offense, but Jackie isn’t exactly ‘romantic lead’ material. Nailed it!

6. BRANDON LEE as Eric Draven (The Crow)

A tricky entry, but there’s a reason why none of the others have been as effective as the original. If someone else puts on the face-paint, this is the benchmark they have to live up to. Brandon Lee brought the murdered rock star a sense of melancholy, pathos and icy wrath that is unmatched. His tragic real-life death puts a macabre aura on the role forever.

5. MICKEY ROURKE as Marv (Sin City)

The chiseled jaw, the gruff voice. All Robert Rodriguez needed to complete his masterpiece of a character was a jagged nose. And the breakout character from Sin City came alive. Before The Wrestler completely revived his career, Mickey Rourke was on his way back to stardom playing a brute with a heart of gold better than anyone who’s ever played a brute with a heart of gold.

4. ROBERT DOWNEY JR. as Tony Stark (Iron Man)

There have been many actors who played Batman. As great as Christopher Reeves was, there have been many who have played Superman. But I can’t imagine anyone being more right for Iron Man, than Robert Downey Jr. Even his real life exploits feed into why he’s so similar to Tony Stark. This combination, with RDJ’s natural charisma, ensures that he’s set the bar with this character forever.

3. J.K. SIMMONS as J. Jonah Jameson (Spiderman)

The cast of Sam Raimi’s Spidey trilogy leaves much to be desired. Toby? Meh. Kirsten? No way. The best casting in all of the Spider-Man movies? The supporting character of J.J. Jameson. Simmons uncannily channels J.J. in every imaginable way. A nearly 1-to-1 ratio that has doomed whoever must follow up in the new Amazing Spider-Man series.

2. WESLEY SNIPES as Blade (Blade)

Imagine LL Cool J. Denzel Washington. Laurence Fishburn. Now laugh. Wesley Snipes easily showed everyone he was the best man for the job (it helps that he can actually, you know, fight). The TNT TV show helped prove how bad anyone else would be as Eric Brooks. Of all the superheroes in all the movies, Snipe’s Blade is literally, the page come to life.

1. PATRICK STEWART as Charles Xavier (X-Men)

Nothing has made more sense. Not even going on looks, but just in what Stewart brings to the role; his history with fanboys, his history with sci-fi, and that overall ‘beyond educated’ quality that gives him resounding presence as a mentor and teacher. It says something that the best casting in all the X-Men movies happens to also be the best casting in all of comicbook films.

I would add

Chris Evans as Captain America
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Heath Ledger as Joker

I think Blade got the revamp in the 90s a little bit before they decided to make the movie. In the comics I saw him guest in, there was nothing goofy about him. He seemed pretty badass to me.

I was torn on Superman! Reeves is the pinnacle, but he does kind of lack the physicality. (I hold hope that a perfect Supes is out there somewhere, undiscovered) But there's no denying at 26, he was more of a man than Brandon Routh at 27.

Honorable Mention Granted!

@GizmoEl

I gotta disagree with the Heath Ledger as Joker.
Dont get me wrong.. The Joker he played was BADASS, but it was not the Joker I knew and loved from the comics. His joker was still amazing though. I like the way the Joker was played in Nolan's universe but not compared to the comic counterpart

@Robgrizzley
Great calls. I've never seen The Crow but I'm sure its great as much as it is talked about on this site. My fav would be Human Torch and Hit-girl though. Perfect casting

It is Christopher Reeve ... not Reeve.

You lose credibility when you don't even know his name.

Then you lose all credibility when you don't include him on your list.

Christopher Reeve (learn it) was born to play Superman. He was the living embodiment of the comic book character.

Lol, my apologies! I do that little mixup all the time (as George ReeveS also played Superman back in the day)

No need to get bent out of shape.

I have to agree that these are pretty great picks. You should have honorable mentions for Christopher Reeve and Chris Hemsworth.

Agree with all of these.

Although I might have substituted Evans as Human Torch for Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

Good list. I think J.K. Simmons as Jonah is the best casting. And it is certainly the best casting of a supporting role.

For those that aren't familiar with his 'regular' work, watch "The Closer" on TNT. The man can act!

I would add Jackie Earl Haley as Rorschach. I didn't care too much for the movie or the book. Despite my purview, the man nailed it!
SKOne

I would agree except that I would have switched out Chris Evans as Human Torch for Mark Strong as Sinestro. No matter how much the hardcore fan base hated Green Lantern, Mark Strong was the perfect Sinestro and should have had more screen time.

I know you're a whore for Nolan and all but come on. No one has seen TDKR, so there's no way anyone can know if Hathaway and Hardy are giving good performances.

@QTony I have the same knee jerk reaction when I hear the Reeve/S fail, but We know what you meant! LOL I agree Chris was/is THE Superman hands down, but theres always been a school of thought that believes he was just plain wack, I don't see it, but whatever.

@JTheMostAwesome I with you 100%. 'Last Stand' blew, but Kelsey Grammer as ol' 'Furball' was absolutely perfect, and actually, quite a ballsy move. A CBM ensemble cast with 'Frasier?' Whatever, it worked.

@Marvel72 Molina IS Doc Ock...nuff said.

But COME ON, guys...you forgot the unforgettable performance of REX SMITH as Daredevil in 'The Trial of the Incredible Hulk'!!! lol of course..

agree with all except Blade and to an extent Torch (I think Evans is better as Cap IMO)
AC1
AC1 - 10/4/2011, 4:16 PM
Yeah, I see what Nolanite is saying, I think Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon should probably be number 2 instead of Blade (who shouldnt be on the list), and I actually think Chiklis as Thing was better than Evans' Torch.

And Tom Hidleston's Loki should have a place too (Why not go further and make it a top 11?)

As for everyone mentioning Molina as Ock, he was good in the film but he wasnt the perfect Doc Ock, there were a lot of changes from the comic version to the film, tons more than any on this list.

@QTony - if you're going to lambaste someones spelling mishap try to not have one yourself "it is Christoper Reeve ... not Reeve"

As for the list, I'd have shuffled a few around. Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man should have been number 2.

Blade shouldn't be on this list, he's nothing like the original character. Marvel redesigned the character after the flicks, a good move mind you, but it's not a true representation of the original character.

There are numerous others I think you're missing though:

Sir Ian Mckellan's and Eric Fissbacker's (sp?) Magneto roles capture the character quite well. While story wise they don't necessarily jive, the character itself is spot on in terms of actions and mentality.

Gary Oldman's Commissioner Gordon is pretty solid. He really pulls off the good cop in a bad cop world.

Chris Evan's Cap was pretty tight. As was Hemsworth's Thor.

Samuel Jackson's Nick Fury, while not my preferred version (I love the old school white Fury WW2 Veteran top spy tough guy), that character was literally made for him to portray.

This may be nitpicking but Aunt May from the Sam Raimi Spider-man flicks fit. Though really it's hard to top J Jonah Jameson from those movies. He was the win.

The computer generated Destroyer stole my breath away, but it's pretty hard to mess up a giant silent metal death machine =) (though he's on this list as a joke really, I mean, it's not like there was hardcore acting involved lol)

As an aside, I know he gets crap for the rendition of Superman, but Brandon Routh, imho, was a just as good, if not at times better, at the nervous, dorky Clark Kent. I love the original 2 movies (I thought any after those two were crap really), but a part of me feels that the only real reason people get so enamored by Reeve's Superman is because he's the Superman most of us grew up with. I think whenever you recast a role it seldom works out for the better (though it does from time to time, off the top of my head, the new Captain America blows the old out of the water, same with Nick Fury (the Hoff is a joke), and the nonsense that was Clooney in the cowl).

All right, I'm stopping, I'm getting ranty.

Can you imagine how cool Doctor Freeze would have been if it was done by Patrick Stewart?

darktoast
darktoast - 10/6/2011, 12:20 PM
Oh crap I forgot one... EVERYONE in the 300.

That movie was so badass most people didn't even realize it's a comic book movie.

grr.. Marv was awesome but what about the rest of that cast? Who wasn't nifty?
RolandD
RolandD - 10/9/2011, 5:36 PM
Great article. Since it is opinion, you will always find people who disagree.
JK Simmons WAS spot on. I was familar with him as the psychologist on Lawn and Order SVU and did not realize that it was him until all three movies had run.

Christopher Reeve would also be on my list He was Superman, especially as Superman was in the comics in the 70's.

I also agree with ACira about the FF movie. I thought Chiklis nailed the ever loving, blue-eyed Thing, although Evans was good. The less said about Alba and Gruffuld (sp?), the better.
