Are These the Captain America & Thor Movie Costumes?

Many of you are probably already familiar with Kotobukiya, the company behind some of the finest statues and busts based off of DC, Marvel and Star Wars characters. A little bit of information that most Kotobukiya collectors seem to overlook is that Marvel Studios works exclusively with them. That's right, they are the only fine art sculpture company that Marvel Studios gives their designs to (including close work with Stan Winston Studios).

It started with Marvel's first independently produced film Iron Man:

Followed closely by The Incredible Hulk:

and finally Punisher: War Zone:

Next month, Kotobukiya will begin production on their latest Marvel Studios collector's item: The Mark IV ARTFX Statue for Iron Man 2:

Alright, now it's time to speculate. Since Kotobukiya was the only company allowed to use Marvel Studio's designs for these figures and there are other Marvel films currently in production, wouldn't that mean that they would handle the next several films exclusively? If so, then wouldn't they have access to the costume designs to be used in those films?

Here are the images from Kotobukiya's next line of figures, based off of the Marvel Reborn series.

Here's the thing that strikes me as odd regarding this information: Only Thor and Captain America are getting statues even though Iron Man is just as important in the Reborn series. Could it be because we already have Iron Man film statues to match these or will we soon see a third piece for the collection? That, in itself, isn't enough evidence to make an educated guess; but when you add the fact that Marvel Studios is exclusively contracted to them, it makes it very plausible.

What do you think? Are these the costumes that Marvel Studios will be using for Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America?

[Make sure to zoom in on the pictures on this page. The detail work is really incredible, especially on the Mark IV Armor]

i am definitely loving the costumes but as far as Capt America they should show him in his WWII costume first and then when they unfreeze him give him something from MUA 2 as the modern costume

These are nice! A must have for any collector. Where is the 'Multi doing a shot in cowboy hat jumping over a fire in Iowa' statue? Or Carnie Hand Jman? Man I was hoping. Just wondering. But for real, nice find Multi, these are cool.

MULTI: Are you sure that the Thor statue is based off of the Reborn storyline because he hasnt been in a single issue of Captain America: Reborn and neither has Iron Man!

The Captain America one obviously is based off of that storyline (and I've been saying for ages - even in an editorial - that I think the reason they redesigned the costume in that series was because of the movie) and I'd be more than happy for that to be the costume in the movie!

I think its far more likely that these are just based off the comic books rather than anything to do with the movies...I hope thats the costume we see in Thor though!

I'd absolutely support that Thor costume.

I like the Cap one, for the most part. I just think the gloves and boots should be more combat/military like. Other than that, thumbs up.

Good intuition MPP!
I can see what you're driving at.

Comicbook companies do have to get costume info to the toy manufacturers early, so the toys/statues, can be released with or just prior to the movie.

As far as I'm concerned...I think that Thor suit would be killer..and I'm liking the CA costume the more I look it over.

Good find bro!

The costumes look good, but there is no reason to think these are the film costumes. As far as we know, cap hasn't even been cast yet. They would want to sculpt the face for both cap and thor. Marvel will definitely be sending along new designs to the sculptors to coincide with the film.

Oh, and dont forget to check out my X-FORCE and IRON MAN 3 Fan Casts under "Fan Fic"!!! :)

MULTI: Well, there's only one issue left and everything I've read so far indicates that Cap and Thor wont be reunited until Siege...also, the final sixth issue was only added recently and I remember seeing these statues a little while ago so they must have worked quickly to include Thor if he's in the last issue! :P

Veeeeery interestinc! I think we will be getting something very similar to that Cap costume if not that exactly..it could look bit silly in film but in fairness, any variation of it was always going to! Its a very difficult sell that stars n stripes get up. The Thor one will probably be close to what we will see in Asgard, but I think on Earth it will be more Ultimate style.

I don't know about you guys, but I feel this would be the perfect Captain America costume and casting:

JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 1/25/2010, 10:45 AM
MULTI: No, but you said it was based off the Marvel Comics Reborn storyline - the only one of which is Captain America! As the Captain America statue is based off the Reborn arc, I was just asking you whether you were sure the Thor one was based off the same storyline! I was only asking dude! :P

And you did actually say above, "Thor is based off the the Reborn story line" and as I just said the only reborn story is the Cap one so I dont think it was unfair for me to assume that was what you were referring to!

If that is indeed how Thor will look, then my prayers for that movie have been answered! And Cap looks GREAT! I really like his customized M1 steel helmet. I had been wondering(and fearing) how they'd adapt Cap's headpiece, namely the wings, but I really like this.

Multi, if this turns out to be accurate investigating, you may now march a mile on MY nuts!!!

I'm a huge fan of that thor costume, I loved it ever since he was resurrected after civil war.

As for cap's helmet, I think it looks pretty cool, I like the way the wings are stenciled on the side.

JoshWilding - 1/25/2010, 11:09 AM
tea: I have to agree! The Reborn costume is cool but I'd prefer to see the version in your picture in the movie...however, I would like to see the Ultimate WWII version at some point!

The main thing I like about the Reborn one though is the headpiece similar to the current Ultimates version - I'd be just as happy to see that in all honesty, lol! :P
NERO
NERO - 1/25/2010, 11:14 AM
I don't know tea, I actually like the helmet. If it’s WWII I think Cap would be wearing one. I would like to see the Ultimates WWII Cap get up in the film, maybe as an initial design leading to this at the end. I like the overall look of the figure because it could work for both TFA:CA and Avengers. The red canvas leggings over the standard GI boot with the pirate roll at the top were a great way to pull the look together. Gloves look cool, and you have to admit the hardest parts of Caps uniform to take aesthetically have always been the odd gloves and boots if they can make those seem reasonable the rest is golden.

The Thor costume just plain rocks, that was one of the best redesigns of an iconic character I've seen since Spidey got the symbiote. It's simple and sleek, colors are solid and eye catching; Black Red Silver and a little Gold thrown in... looks awesom. The square fish scale mail, its all just a kick as update of the original bare armed costume. I hope they use it in the movie, Hemsworth would look bad ass.
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 1/25/2010, 11:26 AM
beautiful statues! Great article, Mr. Poni.

The IM is GREAT!

For some reason I just really don't believe that that this is the costume they will use for Thor. If they did it would be wonderful. Perfect.
But for some reason when I see the Thor look used in MUA2, I can just really really see that being used in a movie. It'a all molded saddle leather and steel and plates. It's very nice. If I were a costume maker and I was looking at it I would say to myself "I can soooo do that".

I can live with the Cap one but of course I would prefer something along the lines of what Teabag put up above.
Furthermore I really like Captain America's costume. It's loud and flamboyant but I don't hear people complaining about that with Spider man or Superman.

Actually I think the rich colors are supposed to be the point. He's not trying to blend in like a regular soldier. He's the point man and the bead magnet that draws the fire off the other soldiers so that they can do their thing.
To Cap it symbolizes important principles that he believes in, and I feel quite sure there will be plenty of potential viewers that will be able to understand that.
NERO
NERO - 1/25/2010, 11:30 AM
True, true, Tea. But there are going to be aspects of the Ultimate incorporated into this whether we like it or not. I mean Samuel L is Fury so there's no bigger arrow pointing to Marvel's intent to blend 616 and Ultimate than that. The only question is to what degree. They could use the look of Ultimates in some places but I'm with you on always using the 616 personalities of the characters.

And like I said as a nod to fans it may be interesting to see them put Cap in the full on Ultimates gear for his first missions and then the amalgamation (reborn) look near the climax.

Casting the right guy for Cap is still my biggest concern and IMO where they could go the most off the rails.

Hawksblueyes - 1/25/2010, 11:44 AM
tea: I agree completely, I hate the Ultimate Cap. He is a completely different character than classic in his actions and personality.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't these two Caps identicle outside of the helmet? And it looks removable.

Great find on those pieces, MPP. Very nice, indeed.

@DarthMulder -- You've summed up my thoughts on Cap's costume completely.

@ hawksblues

yes, one is a variant of the other, they do it a lot with statues and action figures.

personally i think the helmet looks lame on that costume, it looks so out of place. its fine on the WWII style costume, but it looks weird on the more sleek, modern costume.

@ multi

"Only Thor and Captain America are getting statues even though Iron Man is just as important in the Reborn series."

i thought you were talking about the Cap: Reborn comic series too, man.
