BOX OFFICE: 2012 Is Now Officially The Highest Grossing Film Year Ever

With just 2 days to go before we're into 2013, 2012 has surpassed 2009 as the highest grossing box office year in history. And this is thanks in no small part to two CBMs - The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. Read on for more details..

Just two days ago, the total BO (domestically) for 2012 reached $10.6 billion, just passing the old record of $10.59 billion set back in 2009. James Cameron's Avatar played a big part in that, but this year it was mainly down to good ol Superhero flicks, as Joss Whedon's The Avengers and Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises earned more than a tenth of the year’s total gross. Other strong performers included; The Hunger Games, Skyfall, Twilight: Breaking Dawn: Part 2 and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - which is still going strong as we cross over into 2013. There were some disappointment of course - John Carter was a big let down for Disney, and even though it grossed a very respectable $260 million, The Amazing Spider-Man didn’t come close to any film in Sam Rami’s trilogy. Can 2013 be an even bigger year? Well, with the likes of Man Of Steel, The Wolverine and Iron Man 3 coming our way, it'll at least give 2012 a run for its money I'm sure.

Those two movies saved the summer for me. Mostly everything else was a let down and it really didn't pick up until the fall.

So when I saw the Avengers three times in the theater, I was having 12% of the moment? ;)

@Shamo
The acronyms are getting a little hard to follow... what is TDW?

it was a typo, it was suppose to be TTDW for Thor The Dark World.

Next year MIGHT be bigger. 2015 will be the biggest ever if every movie that's supposed to be released that year is released.

Ah. Well it looks fantastic from the cast and pictures we've caught. If there was an annual CBM dud, I'd guess 2013's would be the Wolverine.

That is good news for the industry now if they can get actual number of tickets sold back up from a high of 1.6 billion in 2002. A healthy 1.3 sold this year and rising

Awesome news. Glad to see CBMs making a bigger impact now. As for any 2013 CBMs that'll be bad, I'm looking forward to all of them, but The Wolverine is probably the most likely to fall short. But you never know, perhaps all four films will be excellent.

And 2015 should be a huge year. Avengers 2, Hunger Games finale, Star Wars Episode VII, Fantastic Four, and maybe Avatar 2 and Justice League all in the same year? That sounds insane.

Comic book movies are the best things that's happened to the film industry, and the best thi g that's happened to us,I'll never get sick of them until they start rebooting reboots of the reboot

As great as it is eventually the cbm will die out, it's happened to every genre, it gets old or the next big thing comes out. Enjoy it while its fresh people

Best movie going experience for me was the DKR then Dredd then a tie between Avengers and Spider-Man .

@MrEko: We won't be getting another Hulk movie until sometime after Avengers 2. With that and Ant-Man coming out, I'd be surprised if Marvel squeezed Hulk in between them. 2016 at the earliest, same with the Batman reboot.

$11.8-12 billion for 2015.

Possibly even higher. If all the movies coming out that year, come out that year.

Probably because movie prices are ridiculous now. Yea there were good movies but I should not have to spend 20 bucks for a movie and drink

Avatar made most of its money in 2010.....just saying

Avengers, Looper, Chronicle, Dredd, Life of Pi, John Carter, The Hobbit, TED and Prometheus helped make this a very good year. I could name more but those come to mind fairly quickly

As far as CBMs dying out as a genre, I don't see it. First of all cbms encompass many genres so that alone bodes well for them.

If we get to just the "superhero" genre I can see it slowing down but not dying. That's almost always the case with most genres, but they always remain relevant or just keep coming and going. None ever just die out

@Mr.Ekom i don't think JLA and Batman would release in same year. 2015s gonna be huge for cbm and blockbuster movie fans.

Cost me $19 to take me and my two nephews for an 11:30 show of hobbit and then $30 for 3 hot dogs, med popcorn, small drink, and bag of candy

Sheesh!!! I can get a full dinner and couple of margaritas for that $30 with tip!! and few more drinks for the tickets price! Lol

Anyway, this was a good year for movies IMO. Not just CBMs, but movies in general. Excited for next year!

Marvel officially wins 2012. Avengers holds on to its many records, cements Marvel Studios as the front runner in CBMs, & sets the bar for everything to come.

TDKR and Avengers - 2 of the greatest comic book movies this year and of all times. True juggernauts! Yeah, i'm satisfied! I hope that 2013 maintain the fine quality in CBM.
