Don't Expect A BACK TO THE FUTURE Remake Anytime Soon
We've seen a number of popular 1980's and 90's properties get cinematic reboots in recent years, with Ghostbusters, Point Break, The Crow and more all on the horizon. Could the beloved Back to the Future series be next? Over my dead body, says director Robert Zemeckis...
The Telegraph recently caught up with Robert Zemeckis, who directed all three Back to the Future films (and co-wrote the first), and was asked if he would ever consider signing off on a remake. "Oh, God no," he says. "That can't happen until both Bob [Gale, co-writer] and I are dead. And then I’m sure they'll do it, unless there's a way our estates can stop it." The interview notes that he and Gale have the final say on any future BTTF-related film, as per their original contract in 1984.
"I mean, to me, that's outrageous," he continued. "Especially since it's a good movie. It's like saying 'Let's remake Citizen Kane. Who are we going to get to play Kane?' What folly, what insanity is that? Why would anyone do that?" Zemeckis and Gale previously rejected the notion of writing a fourth Back to the Future instalment, so the uneasiness of revisiting the property doesn't exactly come as a surprise. Thoughts?
