EDITORIAL: Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Comic Book Entertainment?

With all the recent movies and TV shows revolving around comics and superheroes, do we risk oversaturation and possible extinction of the trend? Check out the article to see my take...

If you enjoy comic books and superheroes (and even if you don't) it would be impossible not to notice the large amounts of comic related entertainment these days, specifically in the area of television and movies. It seems that every comicbook from well know ones like Thor and Green Lantern, to lesser known ones like The Losers and Human Target, is being developed into either a movie or a television show. And if it's not a movie or show about characters that already exist, then hollywood is simply making up new ones like Hancock, The Cape and No Ordinary Family.

With all of this out there one cant help but wonder is this too much? Do we run the risk of flooding the marketplace with too many of these at once, therefore drowning most of them out and diluting the quality and freshness? Now as fanboys the answer will most likely be no, since this is the stuff we love. Most of us will see the movies no matter what the critics or the rest of the public think. (yes I actually sat through Jonah Hex at the theatre). However what about the general public? The People who either know nothing about these characters or only know "about" them through pop culture or a fanboy friend? Will they get burnt out on comicbook movies like they did reality game shows, or alien invasion flicks?

Lets face it, we fanboys don't have the numbers or the bank accounts to make most of these ventures profitable. The studios need the general public. What happens so often with these bandwagon trends is the studios go for quantity over quality. We've seen it time and time again where something is successful, other studios or channels attempt to jump on the trend in the hopes of making a quick buck. Sure occasionally something still shines through, but most of it is junk and ends of ruining the genre.

I remember when Unforgiven came out and all of a sudden everyone wanted to make a western, and we ended up getting an endless string of crap movies (The Quick and the Dead anyone?). Given the fact that The Cape and No Ordinary Family didn't do so well with critics or audiences, (The former actually being cancelled before all the shows had even run) and the poor performance of alot of comic book movies like The Losers, Jonah Hex, and yes even Kick-Ass, it appears that the downslide may already have started.

Although many comics are still being greenlit to be turned into movies or shows, one cant help but wonder if they continue to underperform, how much longer will Hollywood continue making them? Eventually they always realize they are losing money and are all to ready to move on to the next popular successful trend. Sure they'll still make the big boys like Bats and Iron Man, but the rest will be left in the comic store.

All that being said, my hope is that given how good all the summer comic book movies seem to be shaping up, hopefully they can reverse this trend. If not, I fear that the comic book entertainment industry may go the way of Deal or No Deal.

What do you think? Are there too many comic book movies and T.V. shows these days?

Fox does suck but that is another story. I think like variant covers, the movies will start to make things just too damn silly for us fans. We'll also expect things to stay the same and get mad when we realize this is just a trend that Hollywood finally tapped into. Also, I for one hate having one of my non-comic reading friends see a stupid interpretation of comic book and think that, that is what I read (see: Elektra, Daredevil, X-Men 3 etc, etc).

So too much is overkill.

In The Cape's defence... oh wait, nevermind it was lost from the begining.
In Jonah Hex's defence... shit ... nevermind

Personally I never see an end to comic book movies, solely on the fact that Hollywood loves to translate written media. Books, Comics, Graphic Novels, even Poems and Myths, Hollywood will continue to suck the tit of those different forms because that's what stories were meant to do. When we picture the story going on in our heads, we're essentially making our own movies. Hollywood can screw up the story (I Am Legend), but essentially it's almost like they're reading the story for us, all we have to do is watch it.

With that being said, the book 'I Am Legend' is easily 100 times more scarier and far much better than the movie. Hollywood changed it too much, but in the end, we're watching another man's adaptation.

HOLLYWOOD! WE WANT MORE COMIC BOOK MOVIES! [frick] YEA!

Too much?
. . . Unless of course it completely dominates the entire genre of entertainment, than its not.

Otherwise, comic book will stay being a subgenre that is usually a part of either sci-fi, adventure, fantasy, thriller, drama or comedy . . . wait that is dominating the all the genres of entertainment.
. . . Luckily vampires are currently dominating entertainment, so I have to say; more super heroes!

totally agree with you superdog, unfortunatly the film industry is going to squeeze out everything they can from CBM's. unfortunatly were having so many pushed through in 2011 that potentially the general public will be sick of them come 2012, which potentially will affect the pinicle of CBM's the avengers (im saying pinnicle cos its gonna mix a variety of different story lines and different characters). which could mean poor sales and a sequal unlikely.

which we really dont want

LET ME JUST SAY THIS..COMIC LOVERS ALL AROUND BACK IN THE DAY WOULD SAY"OMG I WISH THEY COULD MAKE A LIVE ACTION MOVIE OF THIS" AND MOST OF THE TIME THEY WOULD SCREW IT UP AND CHANGE IT AROUND, THROW SOME GAWD HORRID SUIT ON THEM AND USE TWO BIT SPECIAL EFFECTS..ZOOM TO TODAY, CGI, THE ONLY LIMITATION IS YOUR IMAGINATION..NOW THIS STUFF IS POSSIBLE..TOO MUCH? ACTUALLY NOT ENUFF AND IF IT IS TOO MUCH, THE ONLY THING TOO MUCH IS MIS MANAGEMENT OF THE SOURCE MATERIAL AND STORY, CAUSE HONESTLY THATS WHAT A COMIC BOOK IS DRIVEN BY STORY AND ART(COUGH- COUGH FOX, AHEM!) NO I DON'T THINK ITS TOO MUCH AT ALL, ITS ACTUALLY THE TIME FOR IT, THERES A NEED FOR HEROES AND PEOPLE ARENT SAYING "GAWD IM GETTING TIRED OF SEEING THESE DAMN SUPERHERO MOVIES" THEYRE SAYING OOH I CANT WAIT TO SEE THAT. OVERSATURATION OF SUPERHERO STUFF COULD HAPPEN ON TV, BUT USUALLY THEY DON'T LAST TOO LONG IF THE RATINGS ARENT UP TO PAR (HEROES, THE CAPE) HECK THROW US A BILLION OF THEM, UNTIL PEOPLE STOP WANTING HEROES(WHICH WILL BE LIKE NEVER) BRING IT ON, WE HAVE JUST SCRATCHED THE SURFACE ON OCEANS OF REALLY GOOD STORIES...

Long as you make GOOD movies and market the PROPERLY people wont give a shit if its CBM or not. A good movie is a good movie doesn't matter what genre it is.

Um, no. If anything should away, it should be the God awful string of reality shows that pop up every week. Talk about milkin' the cow. One seems to premiere every dang day on seemingly every channel. Comic movies are very much welcome in the entertainment industry, it's really the only form of entertainment I prefer anymore. Can't stand reality shows, or Cop dramas and lawyer shows. Too many.

it's just like any other genre they still make western movies, they still make mythology movies, they still make alien movies, they still make pirate movies, etc. comic book movies are just a new genre... some are good and some are bad just like the others up above...

the public won't get tired of the ones that are good the ones that are bad i doubt anyone but the fanboys go and see... (how do i make this deduction? think of box offices numbers of iron man then think of the losers... lol)

You will get a lot of people who say no on this web site just cause they are big huge fanboys. But in reality, this is a fad just like westerns and 80's action hero movies. Once the market is saturated, no matter what people on here believe, everything that's worth money gets over saturated at one point, the studios will stop making as many or stop making them all together.

The fact that so many are coming out now means that this is popular now by if y'all remember in the 1990's when the comic industry over produced comics because they were popular and worth money? Same thing here. Don't believe me? Take an economics class and you'll understand. There are limits on everything and once passed that limit, you lose interest.

Marvel is way more invested in this than DC, even having their own studio for the purpose of making these movies. What happens when the Comic Book Movie market caves in? Marvel will be in a lot of trouble just like they were in the 90's. The main reason they sold the rights to so many of their characters. Think people! This is good now, but all good things come crashing down eventually

excellent topic..i think the 20/80 rule comes into play..
20% of the characters will do 80% of the business. with that in mind the CBM industry can make movies for second tier characters (praying for moonknight)it's that they won't be as profitable. As long as the big names ie superman , batman x-men and iron man are making money I think movie companies will be happy.
naterator
naterator - 4/7/2011, 1:03 PM
Over saturation will not come anytime soon in my opinion. There are far too many characters out there that still need to be developed for film....as long as hollywood can keep it fun and believable....i think the future is gonna be a-ok.

@StrangerX

Yes, 10 lashings from Davy Jones!

Seriously though, I think it's awesome we're getting to see comic books made into live-action movies and the like. If anything I think we are on the brink of or at least in the beginning of the golden age of comic book movies. I don't know, maybe it won't exactly be the golden age until mostly every comic book publisher is doing big budget live-action movies or shows, that way it could be just like the production of comic books except it will be movies instead. I think we're getting there either way though.

CigBreath - 4/7/2011, 1:07 PM
agreed, all that is good comes to a end. i don't think it has quite reached the level of fad yet, in many ways, the comic book movie thus far (since let's say, Iron Man) has been a good example of a fad not getting too big, so far, the niche has stayed strong and the mainstream has stayed interested, of course as the niche gets bigger the niche becomes the mainstream, then you have too many movies and tv pissing off the original niche and boring the mainstream, then suddenly the mainstream likes something else kabluuey. but wait, there is more? are we talking superheros or comicbook/graphic novel? because the things is another reason this "comic book fad" isnt a fad quite yet is because it has so many fads inside of it--zombies, superheros, monsters, history, future, the ins and outs of daily life. maybe the superhero comic book movie will fad falter out, but the comic book movie will last as long as they are making pictures on the big screen.

Some are hits, some are misses, but I think it's great that Hollywood has dipped into the modern day mythology that is the comicbook genre. Some of the best work ever done on film has been based on great literature, and I think it's great the comicbooks are being recognized as, at their best, the sophisticated, entertaining, and thought-provoking works that they are.

i totally agree with you guys. for me there can never be enough comicbook movies. like i said they will always make comic movies, but i have heard some of my friends already saying ho hum another comic book movie. eventually they will get burnt out and you wont see as MANY movies. not zero. The same thing will happen to the vampire trend. yes they will always make vampire movies but not as many.

MrNil@ couldnt agree more, i hate thay my friends think comics suck because they see crappy movies based on them and think thats what we read. very dissapointing :(

Demand will always exist, Superman will be rebooted over and over again, also Batman, X-men, Spiderman, etc, etc. While the money flows, the CBM will be made. What makes CBM take place with dignity is the cinema technology advance and the respect for the fanbase. If those points were respected, the potential is endless.

Comic Book Movies/Super Hero Movies will never go extinct. It's a genre!!!! It's only over-saturated now because technology of SFX can bring them to life like never before. Westerns were over-saturated back in the John Wayne days, it didn't kill westerns forever nor did gangster movies die off from over-saturation. Yes, Hollywood will find a new trend, it always does, just like when Star Wars came out, they started pumping out clones like Battlestar Galactica and other Sci-Fi movies. Hollywood will always over-saturation a trend as long as it makes them money. They will milk whatever to death until the next big thing. They are doing it now with 3D movies because of Avatar. It's nothing new.

Great write up super. I think the answer is yes there may be too many, for the simple reason that some are simply thrown out there as a tasteless appitizer. For the most part, studios seem to be learning and everything due out this summer looks incredible.

If they maintain the quality I don't think there can ever be enough but anything thrown out for a quick buck is one too many.

The amount of comic book movies out right now is great. When so many are pushed out it is only reasonable to assume that not all are going to be good, right?
As a fanboy I love to see the large amount of movies out now, however, it is also very reasonable to assume that very soon the general public, which is very fickle, will soon loose interest in the genre.
Personally I hope these movies keep coming, especially Iron Man and Green Lantern!!!!

meh, yes there is eventually going to be so many the general audeinces become num to them.

Comic book movies are doing well because the initial response that general( non comic book types) audiences have responded to them. They are new, they are fresh.

Just like the anything, everyone wants a seat at the comic book move table. But as the wow, and oohs shrink and the more people see failures such as spiderman 3.
People who will give new super heros a chance will shrink and they will want another avenue of entertainment.

Eventually comic book movies will not be a fad, and they will own certain percentage of the movie market but I am sure we are currently on a high point, and we will eventually hit a trend down and then settle where they will remain.
