Who is NIGHTCRAWLER?
NIGHTCRAWLER is Kurt Wagner, a mutant with the power to teleport, shadow meld, and adhere to and climb walls. Despite his demonic appearance NIGHTCRAWLER is a devout Catholic. He is also a trained acrobat and skilled swordsman.

NIGHTCRAWLER is a Marvel comics character associated with the superteams, the X-Men and Excalibur. NIGHTCRAWLER was created by writer Len Wein and artist Dave Cockrum, he debuted in Giant-Size X-Men #1 (May 1975).A mutant, NIGHTCRAWLER possesses superhuman agility, the ability to teleport, invisibility in deep shadows, and adhesive hands and feet. His physical mutations include blue fur, two-toed and -fingered feet and hands, yellow eyes, and a prehensile tail.

NIGHTCRAWLER was born with his unusual physical characteristics, but his power of self-teleportation did not emerge until puberty. A gypsy found Wagner an hour after his birth, in a small roadside shelter in the Bavarian Alps. NIGHTCRAWLER's mother is the terrorist Mystiqueand his father is the demonic warlord Azazel. Mystique threw him into a well after a mob found out about him. NIGHTCRAWLER was never legally adopted but was raised by members of the circus.

NIGHTCRAWLER grew up in the circus. He had tremendous natural agility. Later a group of villagers assumed NIGHTCRAWLER base on his appearance was a demon. They were about to kill him when they were psychically paralyzed by Professor Charles Xavier, who had come to recruit NIGHTCRAWLER into the X-Men.

CHANGING APPEARANCES
X-Men costume 1
NIGHTCRAWLER wore his circus trapeze artist costume (or was based on that design) in his early adventures with the X-Men.

Losing his Teleportation Powers
When a tactic designed to disable the super-Sentinel Nimrod backfired NIGHTCRAWLER was unable to teleport for some time.

Excalibur
After recovering from his injuries, NIGHTCRAWLER and Shadowcat join Captain Britain in an adventure in the UK. The heroes work together so well, they decide to form Excalibur. Captain Britain originally assumes leadership of the group, but NIGHTCRAWLER gradually takes the responsibility.

Excalibur costume 2
While he was a guest of Cloud Nine, NIGHTCRAWLER’s costume was damaged. One of the Warpies, Silkworm, designed a new one for him which is just an update of his previous costume

Excalibur costume 3
Still with Excalibur, he further change his look by growing a goatie, a new haircut and an outfit that went along with his love for swashbuckling and pirate movies.

X-Men costume 2
NIGHTCRAWLER's Excalibur teammates, Captain Britain and Meggan got married, after that joyous event the team disbanded. NIGHTCRAWLER returned to the X-Men. He initially wore his classic costume but later went with the Big X themed uniform worn at the time by the group.

X-Men Black Leather
NIGHTCRAWLER left the X-Men for a time to become a priest, when he returned he joined the team in wearing their sets of black leather outfits. It was soon discovered that his priesthood were implanted false memories.

Back to Tights
In the wake of a mutant terrorist attack on New York, Storm brought her team of X-Men back to residence at the mansion for the first time in months. NIGHTCRAWLER ended up being reassigned to this strike force by Cyclops. NIGHTCRAWLER's costume this time is a variation of his 2nd Excalibur uniform.

DEATH of NIGHTCRAWLER
While on the run from an upgraded human/Sentinel hybrid Bastion, NIGHTCRAWLER used his ability to get Hope (Mutant Messiah) as far across the country as possible. Bastion caught up with them, and anticipated one of Kurt's 'ports, putting his arm through Kurt's chest. With the final jump of his life, Kurt brought Hope to Utopia.

LIVE APPEARACE
In the film X2: X-Men United, NIGHTCRAWLER is played by Alan Cumming. This version shares much of the same history with his comic book counterpart. The movie NIGHTCRAWLER has blue flesh instead of blue fur. His skin is also decorated by "angelic symbols" which reflect the spirituality of the character's faith and his devout practice of Catholicism. This form of artistic body modification is due to self-inflicted brandings or scars.

POWERS & ABILITIES
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

Teleportation: Ability to teleport himself, the clothes, he is wearing, and within limits a certain amount of additional mass which is in contact with him.

Subconscious Spatial Awareness: NIGHTCRAWLER has a very limited subconscious extrasensory ability that prevents him from teleporting himself so that his feet, for example, would materialize below the surface of the local ground. Because this ability is so limited, however, NIGHTCRAWLER will not teleport into any place that he cannot see or has not seen in the past. If NIGHTCRAWLER teleported himself into an unfamiliar area, he would run the risk of materializing partially or entirely within a solid object. If too much of his body materialized within a solid object, he would probably be killed.

Micro-Suction Discs: NIGHTCRAWLER can stick to objects with the surface of his hands and feet. This enables him to scale surfaces.

Flexible Bone Structure: NIGHTCRAWLER's bone structure allows him great flexibility. He can remain in a crouched position for a long time and perform contortionist type feats without causing any damage to his spine.

Camouflage: He has limited abilities to blend into shadows, both as a result of his indigo fur and his connection to the light-bending attributes of the dimension through which he teleports. This is also the explanation for why he constantly appears in shadow, even in direct light.

Prehensile Tail: allowing him to grab onto objects with relative ease. His tail is strong enough to not only support his body weight but also lift an adult man completely off the ground. It is deft enough to fight with like a sword or blunt object.

Infrared Vision: NIGHTCRAWLER's always glowing eyes grant him a marked degree of heightened night vision as well.

Superhuman Agility: NIGHTCRAWLER's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels beyond the human body's natural limits.

Superhuman Reflexes: NIGHTCRAWLER's natural reaction time is enhanced to a level beyond the human body's natural limits.

AbilitiesMaster Acrobat: NIGHTCRAWLER is an Olympic-class acrobat thanks to his flexible spine.

Master Combatant: He is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant and a master at fencing, which he can even perform with his tail, which is strong enough to support his entire body weight.

This is the 43rd article in my Know Your CBM Character series. Any requests and suggestions for an article for this series write it down in the comment section BELOW.

Message to the CBM community:To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). Characters in Manga or Anime’, I am not particularly familiar of, I am not discounting these characters but it will probably take some time before I write a feature on them because I have to read up on these characters. Thank you for reading these articles! If there are errors on the feature article above, blame it on my age, humanity and ignorance. Just be sure to check the comment section for the corrections, any error I made will surely be pointed out and corrected by much bigger geeks (because there will always be a bigger geek out there). -This has been PollMaster inviting you to the geekside. @Coloso, couldn't agree more. My absolute favorite X-Man, and I was so pissed when I heard Cumming didn't want to return as the Little Blue Elf for the third movie. Then I saw the piece of crap and respected his decision...

Another pointless death in the Marvel universe, he is/was my favourite X-Man. His appearance in X2 was the best thing about the 2nd X-Men film and I was gutted that he didn't appear in the third film - or have any mention in the film regarding his absence! Oh well I suppose we will just have to wait a year or so for his return due to Time Travel/Alternative Universe/Cloning related reasons.

Interesting tid bit about Nightcrawler...Dave Cockrum originally created the character and his look for DC comics legion of superheroes...but DC rejected the character and when Dave Cockrum moved to Marvel he was introduced into the X-Men...yet again DC proving how stupid they are!!!

I thought Nightcrawler purposely sacrificed himself by teleporting on/through Bastion's arm to mess him up because he was about to grab Hope, not because Bastion anticipated his move..... I could be wrong. If someone knows for sure then say something cause it's gonna drive me crazy now.

Nice work on the fuzzy elf. One if my face characters bow and forever whether they bring him back or not. Who knows with his dad appearing in First Class, if that film is a success they may go on to introduce Kurt in a next Gen type movie along with other classic xmen.

I love Nightcrawler! Unfortunately he had a crappy portrayal on film...I will admit though, the White House sequence is one of the best in any CBM.

Could you Pleeeeeeese do one of these on Toad at some point? :D
