Like the planet Krypton, astronomers have discovered a planet, larger than Earth, orbiting around a red sun.

The alien world known as GJ 1214b orbits a red dwarf star one-fifth the size of our own sun, 40 light-years away in the constellation Ophiuchus, the astronomers reported in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

    Astronomers say they have detected a planet just six and a half times as massive as Earth - at a distance so close its atmosphere could be studied, and with a density so low it's almost certain to have abundant water.

"You will travel far, my little Kal-El. But we will never leave you... even in the face of our deaths... the richness of our lives shall be yours. All that I have, all that I've learned, everything I feel... all this, and more... I bequeath you, my son. You will carry me inside you all the days of your life. You will make my strength your own, and see my life through your own eyes, as your life will be seen through mine. The son becomes the father, and the father the son. This is all I can send you, Kal-El."

"My son, you do not remember me. I am Jor-El. I am ... your father. By now you will have reached your eighteenth year of time as it is measured on earth. By that same reckoning I will have been dead for many thousands of your years. The knowledge that I have of, matters physical and historic I have given to you fully on your voyage to your new home. These are important matters, to be, sure, but still matters of mere fact. There are questions to be asked and it is time for you to do so. Here in this Fortress of Solitude we shall try to find the answers together. How does a Good man live? What is virtue'? When does a man’s obligation to those around him exceed his obligation to himself'? These are not simple questions - even on Krypton there is no precise science which provides us with the answers. I can only tell you what I myself believe. To this end, I have tried to anticipate your questions, and in -the order of their importance to you.

Your name is Kal-El. You are the only survivor of the planet Krypton. Even though you have been raised as a human being, you are not one of them. You have great powers, only some of which you have, as yet, discovered

You are superior to others. You can only become inferior by setting yourself above them. Lead by inspiration. Let your actions and ideals become a touchstone against which mankind may learn how to serve the common good. While it is forbidden for you to interfere with human history itself, your leadership can stir others to their own capacity for moral betterment

The virtuous spirit has no need for thanks or approval. Only the certain conviction that what has been done is right. Develop such conviction in yourself, Kal-El. The human heart on your planet is still subject to small jealousies, lies, and monstrous deceptions. Resist these temptations as you inevitably find them - and your ethical power will then properly outweigh your physical advantage over others...

Live as one of them, Kal-El, to discover where your strength and power are needed - but always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. Your being is both separate and your own , but I have caused your earthly presence and must share responsibility for your actions. They can be a great people, Kal-El. They wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all - their capacity for good - I have sent them you…my only son."

Ah, Tom Mankiewicz. You may have not gotten the credit for the script and you mave have written some campy bits here and there, but your Jor-El was all class.

Oh shit, the Kryptonians are gonna kick our ass when they see what movies and tv shows we have made about them. Quickly, hide all copies of Superman 3, 4 and Returns and Smallville boxsets, and send the cast of Smallville over to my house to hide them (especially Erica Durance, Laura Vandervoort and Allison Mack, you know, to keep them safe lol)

@LEEE
Woh woh woh, you never told us you were from Krypton, that would explain a lot lol

@nerosday
Ah your right, Jor-El had some pretty epic lines in the movies

@ Flames: lol... There a billions of Planets out there, thousands that we have discovered with Hubble, but I'll put it this way, at 40 light years away that means if we had a craft that could reach light speed (186,000 miles per second) it would take 40 years to reach the planet, right now the best the shuttle could do is about 20000 miles an hour (5.5 miles per second), sooo if ya got...

(3600 sec an hour, 86400 secs a day, 31536000 secs a year, 1261440000 secs in 40 years multiply by the speed of light... 234627840000000 miles divided by 5.5 miles per sec... 42659607272727.27 secs for the journey, divide that by the number of secs in a year and...)

1352727 years for them to get there with current tech and mech plus another forty years for the signal to reach us that there is or isn't life (or Transformers) there... so 1352767 years total, but I think the fuel, air, and food will have run out for our intrepid team loooong before then.

So until we develop wormhole or hyper drive technology, or develop a spacing guild and find “Spice” enabling us to fold space with our minds, I think we'll have to stick to that year and a half trip to Mars first.
