Wall Street Has A Way For Warner Bros. To Quote " Be More Like Marvel"

Wall Street looks at how Warner Bros. can achieve a similar successful financial formula, like Marvel Studios and Disney. There suggestion is to turn the keys over to a very familiar name...

The investor community is picking Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS) as a stock to BUY based off the recent Avengers trailer and recent success of Captain America and Thor this past summer. There not so crazy about Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) thanks in part to who they put it, "failed to establish a cinematic foothold for one of its own lesser heroes in June, Green Lantern. However, they do offer some suggestions as to how TWX can be just as successful as Marvel.

Look In-house
My suggestion? Look to Bruce Timm, the creative genius behind DC's animated epics. His latest -- Green Lantern: Emerald Knights -- has taken in roughly $2.9 million in DVD sales, according to heNumbers.com. Count me among the buyers. My 6-year-old son and I rented Emerald Knights on iTunes because I thought the live-action version might be too scary for him.

As a series, DC's animated flicks have grossed more than $73 million since 2007. We don't know how those sales have fed profits, but using animation and voice-over narration is far cheaper than hiring actors, actresses, production trucks, makeup artists, visual-effects geniuses, and the like. DVD and digital distribution also cost less. It's a formula that, judging by DC's aggressive production schedule, seems to work really well.

Warner's animated group has also won over fans through television-distributed hits such as Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited. Want to kick-start DC's lesser franchises, Mr. Johns? All the elements for a Justice League film -- a flick comparable with that of next May's The Avengers -- is present in two seasons' worth of Justice League Unlimited stories.

The Marvel Formula
At the very least, I think JLU has something that Green Lantern didn't and that every one of Marvel's major live-action hits had: a strong writer-director team with a specific vision for what to put on the screen. GL had four writers. Four. No wonder this otherwise-promising story got garbled on screen.

The Avengers? It has Whedon, a writer with top-notch credentials when it comes to scripting movies, TV, and, yes, even comic books. That's why I'll be unsurprised if Disney wins big when the film reaches theaters next May. Take notes, Time Warner. The formula for success is right in front of you.

This article was written by Tim Beyers of Motley Fool.com, someone who's a Time Warner shareholder. I must say this was a very well written argument and I agree with his ideas about how Warner Bros. can become just as successful as Disney/Marvel.

One things for sure, the world of CBM's is no longer a topic of hot discussions only amongst the small corner of the population known as fanboys. It's become an industry of significant financial interest and it has a pretty significant effect on the financial industry as a whole.

Do you agree with these comments and the proposal for DC's success? Think Bruce Timm is the man for the job? Sound off below in the comment section and be sure to vote!

The DCAU has had some of the best on screen material seen within the comic book genre. I think they should give Bruce Timm a chance.

I love Bruce Timm's work. He helped to set a new standard for animation and continues to produce quality work. I'd be interested to see what he could do working with live action, but it's not a definite that his success would translate. To me, he's not the definite answer, but giving him a shot might be a great idea.

The success of DC animations is something that boggles the mind. Maybe they do need Bruce Timm but i would hate for them to place the burden of success on the shoulders of one man. DC just needs a vision and they need to stick to it. None of their movies are cohesive. With TDKR being Nolan's last offering in the franchise, fans might have to wait a while for that ever elusive JLA movie. But lets see what Snyder has to offer with MOS.

Nothing beats Bruce Timm's work; but he usually great with animation. Though, imagine him supervising all of DC Comic's live action projects? I think those movies will be well done with him as producer.

I think they have performance anxiety + only focusing on the money makers. Thats why you have all these Batman and Superman movies. Im sure the failure of Jonah Hex & GL probably scared the living daylights out of them.

Nolan made Two Batman movies that are way better than the majority of the movies Marvel likes to shove down out throats. That being said, pushin the movies out does make money but what about impact? They say "success" they talk about money but where Marvel does ok in movies, DC dominates in animated features. Couldn't keep the Spectacular Spiderman on to save their lives yet have another series in the works while most DC animations run past at least three seasons. And with DC currently ahead of Marvel in comic sales, both paper and digital, I think that their "success" in live action in not properly analyzed. You can pay to see the movie, sure, but is it worth watching again is the proper question. That is real success.

And DC, too. I'm sure they'll get the right writers and directors for their movies.

Meanwhile, we have The Avengers, Thor 2, Iron-Man 3, and many others to enjoy in the near future. Lol.

But seriously, good luck. :)

I'm a big marvel fan, but i will be honest when i say that DCAU has been kicking Marvel's ass in the animation department. I want to believe in the live action aspect of DC's movies..but they just haven't been good..the only worthwile profit has been Batman..i'm hoping that Supes does very well. I say let Timm run DC's live action properties..what's the worst that can happen that hasn't already..ie green lantern. If Warner Bros wants to succeed..give Timm a chance.

Also..i'm not saying Marvel is superior and DC inferior or the other way around. I'm a geek when it comes to anything comic related, i will support any comic book being turned into a movie or show because I am just a geek..been that way since i got into comics...

... Warner Bros. is incredibly successful. Disney is successful as well, but Marvel Studios are nowhere near that success that Warner has achieved.

Alright lets just ignore the fact that X-Men First Class had 6 writers and that movie was awesome. Thor had 5 writers and was decent. And Iron Man had 4 writers and was great.

True less cooks in the kitchen is probably better but good movies can be made of numerous writers involved. Not sure why he would fixate on that point which is easily rendered moot.

The Majority of DC character unforunately are corny as hell, there was no way any Green Lantern film was going to be a smash hit when its as cheesy a conception as it is. They'd have the same problem with a Martian Manhunter movie or an Aquaman movie. These characters are just simply too poor in their concepts for todays audience having not been adapted significantly enough through all the years of silly DC reboots that basically kept them with the same silly names and same silly origins.

DC is kinda filled with too many characters that are either basically "something obvious-Man/Boy or Lad" or "something obvious-Woman/Girl or Lady" or even worse literally named by some "Blatantly obvious colour-Blatantly obvious thing" stuff like Blue Beetle, Green Lantern, Red Tornado, Green Arrow, Black Canary or Red Robin!! Then they simply made up silly cities and towns that don't exist to really test your suspension of belief in the substance like Metropolis, Star City, Central City or Smallville!

Marvel kept the silly names with the above equations to a minimum, kept the authentic cities and towns and updated their characters to go with the times with way more sensible costumes and designs than what DC ever did. All this makes the concept far more easy to relate to than what DC has to offer with its La-La land inhabiting, costumed heroes! The more times change, the more DC keeps finding a way to regress its characters back to all the silly and cheesy things that it started with. That's fine for fanboys but for the General public it represents an unattractive immaturity that just screams "this is for kids!" and unless they grew up reading it which for most is an absolute NO, then they have no interest in parting with their hard earned cash now.

DC's greatest asset is their Batman and Superman franchise because of the many shows, cartoons and films that the general public has grown up with through out the last 50 years. They need to introduce their universe using these main two as a guiding hand, they needed to give cameos to their characters in Batman and Superman movies. Just throwing them out into an uninterested public the way they are simply isn't going to attract anything but fanboys and there isn't enough fanboys in the entire world to make a $150 million budget movie a significant hit!

I have been saying this for so long. Bruce Timm should be like the Kevin Feige of DC. Just look at his track record for the Animated universe, its impecable. All I would say is get some one to guide him and mentor him on making the transition from animated to live action. Bruce Timm is a damn legend. The reason DC is failing in getting a shared universe is because they have no guidance like Kevin Feige is to Marvel.
