In just a few months moviegoers will be transported into the virtual world of OASIS with the release of Ready Player One. However, fans of the novel that the film is based on will be happy to know that they, too, will be able to return for another adventure on the pages.
Following the release of the trailer for Ready Player One, Ernest Cline - the author of the book its based on - confirmed he is writing a sequel.
During a livestream for the blockbuster film, Cline was asked if it was true that he was writing a sequel. "It's true. I can’t talk about it too much, but there’s no better inspiration for a writer [than] to return to a world they’ve already worked on when they’re watching Steven Spielberg bring that world to life," Cline said. Although Cline couldn't share any specifics, he did say that watching director Steven Spielberg bring his story to life on the big screen has actually helped inspire and influence his work on the sequel, as he's bounced ideas off the director for the sequel novel.
The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
Ready Player One hits theaters March 30, 2018.
