Godzilla vs. Kong is making the sort of money that Christopher Nolan could only dream of when he hoped Tenet would be the movie to bring the worldwide box office back to life last summer.

As of yesterday, the crossover has earned $285.4 million globally - no easy feat when many theaters remain closed (including those in the UK and much of Europe). As you might expect, China has contributed a lot to that haul, which is no great surprise when moviegoers there are flocking to multiplexes.

It's taken Godzilla vs. Kong 12 days to pass the $200 million mark; Tenet, on the other hand, took 24.

This is good news for the MonsterVerse (#RestoreTheMonsterVerse trended worldwide over the weekend), and in North America, this blockbuster event has racked up $48.5 million over five days.

"It’s no surprise that these two iconic titans would lead the charge back to theaters around the world and even exceed expectations in such a massive way," says Warner Bros. President of International Distribution, Andrew Cripps. "With our incredible numbers in China leading the charge, and powerful openings in such markets as Australia, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and Mexico, we’re looking forward to a robust theatrical run for Godzilla Vs Kong across the globe."

Where does the franchise go next after Godzilla vs. Kong? Well, it would make sense to revisit that early war between Godzilla and Kong's ancestors...a decision which would likely mean fewer humans!

@Vigor - I am sure they will branch off with a series of films related to King Kong. Will this all culminate into one big film, a la "Destroy all Monsters"?

This movie was fun, nonsensical, but fun. It had good pacing which I appreciated.

Story would have been a bit better if they kept it simple.

I hope the studio takes this as a sign that there is interest in a sequel. I know I am interested in one.

Bring on Destroy all Monsters (Monster Island is already kinda set up with the Titan contaiment facility), Hollow Earth, and finally Destoroyah

"It's taken Godzilla vs. Kong 12 days to pass the $200 million mark; Tenet, on the other hand, took 24."

And Wonder Woman 1984 never even reached the $200 million mark.

@Waddles - True. But these Godzilla numbers only prove that Wonder Woman should and could have made a lot more money at the BO. At least around the $300 million mark.
