READY PLAYER ONE Director Steven Spielberg Battled The Crew Over References To His Own Movies In The Film

Ready Player One director Steven Spielberg helped define 80s geek culture with his filmmaking, but he attempted to nix any reference to his past films in the upcoming sci-fi movie. Read on to find out why!

Ready Player One is filled to the brim with nostalgic references. The movie is based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel of the same name and is heavy on ‘80s geek culture. And perhaps no one is more responsible for defining that decade than Steven Spielberg, who just so happens to be Ready Player One’s director.

Obviously this was a perfect match given Spielberg’s collection of films, which includes the likes of E.T., The Goonies, Gremlins, Back to the Future, and many other  decade-defining hits. Oddly enough, though, Spielberg wasn’t keen on the idea of referencing his own movies in the film. As EW reports, “the director didn’t want the new movie to become a series of shout-outs to his older ones.”

Spielberg did allow one exception: the time-traveling DeLorean from Back to the Future, which Spielberg executive-produced, is in the movie. Other than that though, any reference to Spielberg’s movies was likely snuck in by the crew - and most of them are subtle visual nods to movies he produced rather than directed.

Speaking to EW, the crew detailed specific references they tried to sneak into the movie, only for Spielberg to notice and nix. There was a shot of graffiti on one wall of the dystopian real-world set that included a grinning fiend from Gremlins, which Spielberg promptly removed. In another scene, there was a nod to the villainous bank-robbing brothers from The Goonies. “We had a sly Fratelli’s Diner, but we got caught,” production designer Adam Stockhausen said. “He nixed it.”

Despite the director’s attempts to squash any references to his movies during principal photography, he admitted that some still managed to sneak their way in via post-production, particularly in the CG-created virtual-reality world OASIS.

“I think a lot of the digital artists were trying to get some of their favorite ’80s cultural references in there, you know?” Spielberg said. “And having seen every shot 30 times as we go through all the different steps from pre-viz to animatic to final, I started noticing little things. They snuck a gremlin in.”

I said, ‘Well, I guess it’s too late to take that guy out.’ So he survived the cut,” he added.

Spielberg’s reluctance to include references to his own movies has more to do with giving other 80s films the spotlight, and the director was eager to showcase the work of others. “I didn’t corner the ’80s market,” he said. “There’s plenty to go around.”

Ready Player One opens in theaters March 29.

Not much to say about this. Humble move. He prob would have been roasted by the internets if he left them in.

I am very excited for this film. I too will be there weekend one. I predict it will be on many top 10’s of The year. If for no other reason than people aren’t expecting much...

Seems pretty classy on his part, but at the same time he did sort of run 80s pop culture, so it’s also a little bit of a shame

Wasn't the Jurassic Park T-Rex in this too?

probably a good call. It'd be different if the easter eggs were just his own films, like this was a career retrospective.
BUT he doesn't see it that way. it's just the next story he wanted to tell.

**incorrect statment**
the DeLorean, Back to the Future was NEVER Spielberg's movie. All he did was Executive Produce it. that could be he had a lot or very little input on the film. so a reference in Ready Player One is out of his hands. its up to Robert Zemeckis if the DeLorean is included or not

@spiderman620 - same as gremlins and the goonies. But they do often get lumped together as spielberg films. Watching interviews with zemeckis and Joe dante though, they do insist how much help spielberg gave them in getting the films off the ground.

@spiderman620 - If an autuer produces a movie it counts as their movie as well as the actual director's.

I remember when everybody was getting up in arms for describing the recent TMNT movies as Michael Bay movies because he only produced them and did not direct either one, but they were Michael Bay movies. They had his stink all over them.

Likewise movies that Speilberg has produced have his magic sprinkled all over them.

(Yes, I did just call Michael Bay an autuer. I'm going to Hell).

@spiderman620 - But Ready Player One is his movie. If the DeLorean is in it it's because of Spielberg, not Zemeckis. How can you say references in Ready Player One are out of his hands, it's his film?

@rexlincoln - Yes, he helped a lot. However, it does not make it HIS film and that's why the vehicle in question was included in the film was the point i was trying to make. but thanks for the reply..cheers

@GwenLantern - i agree with you that Micheal Bay received hate for TMNT that he did not deserve(myself included in that). however i think(and this is just my opinion) EVERYONE hates Micheal's films so people unwarrantley like to hate him.

Micheal isn't a TERRIBLE directo. I tend to think moives like Bad Boys and Bad Boys II are generally enjoyable films. However, he destroyed the Transformers films and should have left the franchise YEARS ago.

I will disagree with you that if a person Produces the film it makes it "there film". thats incredibly untrue because they did not write the film. its like the Bill Finger Situation

@BullyFU - the article makes it seem as if Spielberg had more to do with BTTF then what really happened. Spielberg was a financial backer and helped get the movie green-light at Universal. that's pretty much it. that's what i meant. i apologize if that wasn't clear.

@BullyFU - what i meant was Spielberg can ask Zemeckis if he can use it in the film, but its ultimately Zemeckis to say yes or no. especially sense he owns the rights to the film

I spotted E.T. in one of the TV spots, in-between Robocop and Marvin the Martian.

There's a huge T-Rex trying to eat the Delorian and Keneda's bike as they pass the cinema shoing Jack Slater III (see Zakk Penn doesn't mind referencing his early works). I think that T-Rex is obviously supposed to be Rexy from Jurassic Park.

There's the Gremlin and the Delorean, mentioned in the article.

On one of the movie posters there is graffiti that says "Gunters never say die", which is a nod to The Goonies.

There is reportedly references to the Speilberg produced cartoon Animaniacs, Real Steel, Shrek, Pinky and the Brain (though I can't vouch for any of those, personally).

Bumblebee from the Speilberg produced Transformers franchise is in a recent TV spot.

There are Halo soldiers in the movie, which is technically Speilberg since he's producing the Halo TV series.

Jessica Rabbit is supposed to be somewhere in the club, but I can't seem to spot her anywhere, myself.

There is also supposedly a tripod from War of the Worlds in there, somewhere (although, if I were him, I would've snuck a reference to the Cobra-headed Fighting Machines from the 1953 War of the Worlds).

I've also heard somebody say that they've spied Indy in one of the TV spots.

Damn, I forgot Spielberg did Gremlins. I was 10 years old when that was released.

@ImmovableForce - That's how they ended up with the PG-13 rating. Along with Temple of Doom of course.
