READY PLAYER ONE Scribe Zak Penn Will Adapt ROM: SPACEKNIGHT For Paramount And Hasbro

Shortly after adapting Ready Player One for Steve Spielberg and signing on to expand the world of The Matrix for Warner Bros., it has now been revealed that Zak Penn will adapt ROM for Hasbro's Allspark Pictures and Pararmount. ROM, or Read-Only-Memory, originated as a toy and appeared in Marvel's ROM: Spaceknight comic book. The character has since appeared in titles from other companies like IDW so this upcoming adaptation isn't going to be set anywhere near the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Hailing from a utopian society on the planet Galador, ROM is a cyborg who, after defeating the invading Dire Wraith on its planet, continues the battle on Earth and other planets. It's a property with a lot of potential on the big screen, especially as sci-fi movies are more popular now than ever before thanks to Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy. Penn has made it clear in the past that he's a big ROM fan.

The writer has a lot of experience in the world of comic book movies after contributing to everything from X-Men 2: The Last Stand to The Incredible Hulk and The Avengers. Are you guys excited to see ROM come together? As always, share your thoughts on this news in the comments section below.

It can't be ROM: Spaceknight, though, since Matvel own the Spaceknights.

*Marvel.

(Matvel is the Marvel/Mattel conglomerate, in the future).

@GwenLantern - actually the original Parker Brothers figure is called ROM The Space Knight, so I'm pretty sure Marvel can't claim ownership on that part of the character.
GwenLantern

@ChangAlang - :)

@GreedoSarducci - They do claim ownership on those elements, I think. Not sure of the specific legalities or anything, but IDW recently had to lose the Spaceknight part, for their relaunch, whilst Marvel were allowed to do a Venom: Spaceknight comic.

I have one ROM comic. I better catch up!

I’m happy to see this being produced but I have my doubts with HASBRO at the reigns.

Damn shame this won't be part of the MCU. It'll be interesting to see what kind of story they build around the character, seeing as how Galador and the whole Dire Wraith thing is all Marvel material. They'll essentially be starting with a blank slate.

The article refers to ROM being a robot. I thought the Spaceknights were trained humanoid aliens that were permanently fused to the technology to become protectors?
