LOGAN Director James Mangold Was Never Actually Developing A BOBA FETT Movie For Lucasfilm

Way back in 2018, it was reported that Logan director James Mangold had started actively developing a Boba Fett movie for Lucasfilm. Now, Kathleen Kennedy has finally set the record straight...

We know that Fantastic Four director Josh Trank got relatively close to making a Boba Fett movie, but the project fell apart shortly after his disastrous Marvel Comics adaptation hit theaters. Years later, it was reported that Logan helmer James Mangold was actively developing a movie starring the iconic bounty hunter for Lucasfilm, but it obviously never came to pass. 

Now, after his reintroduction in The Mandalorian, the character will take centre stage in The Book of Boba Fett. Talking to Empire Magazine (via CBR), Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy addressed those reports about Mangold head on. 

"There really was virtually no previous development [of a Boba Fett project]," she confirmed. "We never got very far with Josh, quite frankly, because we never developed anything specific with him. And Jim Mangold never worked on a Boba Fett story."

It was The Hollywood Reporter that first reported on Mangold's involvement, though he'd soon take to social media to seemingly deny it. Chances are the filmmaker had a general meeting with the studio about Boba Fett and other Star Wars characters, with the trade jumping the gun somewhat. 

The important thing for fans of this Galaxy Far, Far Away is the fact Boba's story has continued, albeit on the small screen rather than in theaters. It feels like he has a bright future on Disney+, with The Book of Boba Fett potentially just the first of many future stories revolving around the anti-hero. 

The Book of Boba Fett arrives on Disney+ on December 29. Stay tuned for updates.
