STAR WARS: Damon Lindelof's Movie Searching For Non-White Lead As Theories Finn Will Return Heat Up

We have another update on Damon Lindelof's (Watchmen) mysterious Star Wars movie, and with Lucasfilm reportedly looking to cast a person of colour in the lead role, rumours about Finn have already begun...

We've been hearing that Damon Lindelof's upcoming Star Wars movie might feature a person of colour in the lead role, while it's also been reported that characters from the sequel trilogy are set to factor into the mysterious project.

Justin Britt-Gibson is joining the Watchmen showrunner to pen the screenplay, Ms. Marvel's Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is directing, and all signs point to this being the first of the many upcoming movies to arrive in theaters. The question is, will that lead also be a character from the sequels?

The Hot Mic (via SFFGazette.com) has weighed in with an update, with Jeff Sneider confirming that Lucasfilm hopes to cast a male person of colour in the lead role. Their age is currently unknown, but speculation is running rampant that this will either be John Boyega's Finn or a character related to him (the former Stormtrooper's child, for example).

It will ultimately come down to how far into the future this movie goes, though there's a very vocal desire among Star Wars fans to pick up with Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron again.

None of them received overly satisfying endings to their respective stories, though giving them little more than cameo roles here arguably lessens their importance to the wider Star Wars franchise. On the other hand, serialised storytelling is working extremely well for Star Wars on Disney+, so perhaps that's the plan for movies now as well.

The Rise of Skywalker strongly hinted that Finn might be a Jedi in the making, but never really followed up on that. If we do pick up with him or one of his children in this movie, it would be fun to see what became of the Resistance hero and whether he ended up becoming a full-blown Jedi Knight after being trained by Rey.

It's worth noting that, last night, Sneider took to Twitter to say he's now been informed the movie's lead is female. However, as you can see below, he quickly debunked himself, so we're not discounting the possibility that Finn makes his return here.

Damon Lindelof's Star Wars movie is expected to be released in theaters on December 19, 2025.

Boyega's Finn was quite under served, but I think if they're going in a new direction they should pick up with some unknown character or those kids from the end of The Last Jedi.

@Weightgame - as long as they also have a peanut allergy and are missing a foot, we'll have total representation.

Saying they dropped the ball with him after Force Awakens seems redundant because they dropped the ball with everything after that film. However he’s maybe the only character from the sequels that I’d have any interest in seeing more of

Just so happened to have watched the latter part of Last Jedi yesterday. What a colossal waste of characters. That movie completely ended my lifelong love of Star Wars after being addicted to it since the age of six. The upside is I have a lot more money left over not buying SW collectibles anymore.

Oh well. At least the movie looked good.

@GreedoSarducci - TLJ was the best of that trilogy i thought. Definitly not the best star wars movie though.

Luke's self exile and death aside, Johnson tried something different with the story which i think holds up.

I just wished they'd have kept Ren the Villian in the follow up as they had set up in the TLJ before they tried to course correct with Palpetine.

As silly as the space chase was, it lead to that Holdo maneuver, which was beutiful.

@GreedoSarducci - Sad that the best SW movie since ESB did it when you lapped up AOTC lol

@UniqNo - yep. Its a great film really. It's not flawless but there's far more good than bad

@Toonstrack - never said I was a fan of AOTC. The Prequels were a rough ride, but none of them were the abominations that the Disney trilogy is. If you think TLJ is good, more power to you. As far as I'm concerned it was horrible and ROS was even worse. The only good SW film to come from the Mouse is Rogue One.

@GreedoSarducci - well rogue one is better than anything Lucas made post ROTJ so I'm with you there.

I'll take the ST over the PT any day. Even with its flaws
