Solo: A Star Wars Story not living up to box office expectations changed Lucasfilm's plans for the film series in a massive way, and the franchise is now going on hiatus while Disney goes back to the drawing board and talks to the likes of Jon Favreau, Rian Johnson, and David Benioff and D.B. Weiss about another trilogy of movies unrelated to the Skywalker Saga.
But just because that story has come to an end, doesn't mean we won't see more of newly introduced characters like Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron. During a recent interview, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy weighed in on the future of that trio and while she wouldn't get into specifics, it definitely sounds like the door is open to them returning somewhere down the line.
"You know, there is an appropriate time. We're using this appropriate time as an opportunity to see where we're going now that we're leaving the Skywalker Saga behind," she revealed. "But there's no question that there's certain characters that we've created certainly in the last three movies that we may very well wanna see down the line in the future."
We'll just have to wait and see what happens next with these characters, but it would be fun to be a fly on the wall in Lucasfilm right now as it definitely feels like they're taking the franchise down some unexpected routes. Plans certainly seem to have changed since movies revolving around the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi (who could move to Disney+), Yoda, and Darth Vader were rumoured.
