AVATAR Expected To Gain A Significant Box Office Lead Over AVENGERS: ENDGAME Following Chinese Re-Release

Avatar is once again the highest grossing film of all-time, but any hopes of Avengers: Endgame one day regaining the #1 spot might have been dashed by this latest update from the Chinese box office!

Over the weekend, Avatar regained the title of the world's highest-grossing film. Avengers: Endgame was #1 for a good eighteen months or so, but James Cameron's film has already gained a significant lead.

Despite only receiving official clearance from China's regulators just three days before it arrived in theaters, the 3D film (which was originally released in 2009) still earned $21.1 million from Friday to Sunday. Another $2.8 million was added yesterday, and The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Chinese ticketing company Maoyan expects Avatar's run to end with a $54.2 million haul.

That means Avatar would sit atop the box office with $2.844 billion compared to $2.797 billion for Avengers: Endgame. With a lead of $47 million, Cameron's film is likely to hold the top spot for a while.

However, before you get too upset about the Infinity Saga's grand finale being knocked down to #2, the trade is quick to explain that, "Someday, the Russo brothers' Avengers: Endgame, the prior record holder, will probably have a shot at a rerelease too, potentially tipping the scales of box-office history back in its favor."

With at least two more Avatar sequels on the way, and an Avengers 5 no doubt likely to break box office records at some point, this battle is far from over. If Disney does choose to put Avengers: Endgame back in theaters, however, then the world of Pandora could soon have the MCU nipping at its heels again.

I hope James has found a way to leave me in awe with part two like he did in one. The first one was to the date the best movie visual experience on my life.

I maybe asking for a lot...

I really cannot see any of the avatar sequels beating this, 3D is over, the movie is over 10 years old and I can’t even remember the last time I watched it because the actual story is meh and where the hell is Sam Worthington these days. Despite this though I’m more interested to see the technical advancements the movie might use these days than anything else

Should re releases even count towards records? Not that it really matters or what the movie is but the studios are deciding which movie has a record by choosing which movies they want to re release again. Disney wants Avatar to hold it so they can promote the upcoming movies by saying biggest movie of all time.

anyway Endgame wont catch it cause by the time Endgame does get one say in a few years before next Avengers movie everything will be back to normal. Right now really is the perfect time because China is exploding and there arent any big new hollywood movies dropping over there so its gonna make even more money. It could put 100 mill gap between it and Endgame and no way Endgame comes close to that in a re release 3 years from now.

Would be interesting to see what Endgame would do if it was released now over there but still not even sure it would do as well because it was just in theaters while Avatar is a decade old. So many people over there never experienced it so going to see it now is new.

As for a sequel I think the next one does really really well but not anywhere near 2.8 billion. I think by the time it releases things will be pretty normal by then and this movie could do 1-1.5 billion. People are gonna want to see what he did with sequel but after that unless its really great I think a 3rd movie drops and then a 4th/5th if they happen drop more.

@Chris827 - if a movie can still make movie then yes it counts, gone with the wind stayed for a record long duration in cinema as it kept making money as well

@calino2212 - There was no need to rerelase avaturd anyway this is cheating pure and simple its like if after the pandemic was over and the US reopened the election and the trump supporters bought it en masse and we kicked Biden out because Trump suddenly had more votes

@TheCoonII - Are you really going to compare a political election and a blockbuster release based on money?......

I thought south park would have taught you better the difference between the two.

Doesn't matter. The inevitable Secret Wars movie will destroy the box office record.

I’d imagine that Disney’s current incentive is to have Avatar back in the lead for the marketing of “Avatar 2”. I’m not sure if “Endgame” will ever get the same kind of re-release heat, save perhaps some grand future return of Iron Man, Cap and the like.

I remember people saying no movie would ever get close to Avatar and Endgame had no hope of doing it, but now Avatar needed to be re-released AGAIN just to retake the top spot 🤷🏽‍♂️

@TheWalkingCuban - Wait Creatine dehydrates you during workouts thus needing tons of water if anything he needs lots of protein drinks & snacks plus NO2

How does someone write this and not manage to use the word 'balance'?

Or, instead of re releasing, Marvel just makes a fifth Avengers movie that reassembles the cast in a massive Secret Wars storyline and sees favorite heroes and villains return.

That way we wouldn't have to always re release the same old stuff 🙃

So the fist Avatar was a gimmick film. The whole reason to even see it was the 3D tech used to film and present the movie. The story itself is not interesting. I likened it to Pocahontas in Space. It's not a new theme and I don't see how anyone wanted sequels other than James Cameron.
Then again, I could see this reinvigorating the Cinema Business and bringing people back to theaters for the 3D experience.

Beats me.
