Denis Villeneuve Is Aware Of The "Huge Challenge" Of Making A BLADE RUNNER Sequel

Denis Villeneuve has developed quite the filmography so far. However, the talented Prisoners & Sicario director knows he'll have to deliver some of his best work yet to please the fans when he takes on the sequel to Ridley Scott's revered sci-fi movie, Blade Runner...

Denis Villeneuve is one of the most talented directors around at the moment. After stunning audiences with Prisoners and Enemy back-to-back in 2013, the French-Canadian director is currently receiving rave reviews for his latest thriller Sicario at TIFF. It's for this reason that many longtime fans have welcomed his appointment on the Blade Runner sequel with open arms. However, given the lasting impact Ridley Scott's 1982 original has had on a whole generation of filmmakers and fans alike, he's still well aware of the pressure on his shoulders to deliver.

"It's a huge challenge
because you don’t want to cut and paste, otherwise why [do it]?" he admitted to Collider (via JoBlo). "At the same time you have to respect what was done, so you have to find the right equilibrium between being faithful to the first one and bringing something new at the same time that will make sense to the Blade Runner universe."

Additionally, he elaborated on his "deep fear" over having to follow up to one of his own all-time favorites. "When I heard that Ridley Scott wanted to do another movie in the Blade Runner universe, at first my reaction was that it’s a fantastic idea, but it may be a very bad idea," he claimed, "I’m among the hardcore fans of Blade Runner. Blade Runner is one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s a movie that is linked with my love and passion for cinema."

Villeneuve also confirmed that filming commences next summer, but remained tight-lipped about any location details. He did, however, reveal that "the [sequel] will be autonomous and at the same time there will be some link" to Scott's sci-fi masterpiece, and added that it only took him "2.5 seconds" to convince acclaimed DoP Roger Deakins to collaborate with him on the project.

With talents like Deakins, Villeneuve and the incoming Ryan Gosling all on board, and both Scott and star Harrison Ford set to return, Blade Runner 2 looks like it could have a bright future. Do you like what you're hearing so far - or do you think a sequel is totally unnecessary? Sound off below!

The Untitled Blade Runner Sequel currently has no official release date, but in the meantime you can catch Villeneuve's highly touted Sicario in theatres October 2.

This could be...something. I think I'll really know how to feel about this movie when they cast the main lead. I keep picturing the most generic actor filling Harrison Ford's shoes.

PRISONERS was amazing, ENEMY was so cool and thrilling and SICARIO looks damn good; so I believe in this guy and his potential to deliver a great Blade runner film.

ugh im not stoked about an old Harrison Ford returning. Idk, i feel like you can get away with not having him back. Its not that big a deal, i think, if Ford is absent from a blade runner sequel. Star wars, i get. You need him there. His significance to that franchise is massive. I always loved the world of Blade runner, more than Ford's character. I loved Roy's character more than Ford too. Hopefully his role is small. I think it should focus on new replicants.

@XxLIONHEARTxX how he didn't get an Oscar nomination, I'll never understand

Will this tie into "ready player one"?

Not sure this needs a sequel, not that it will stop Hollywood, but it definitely doesn't need Ford.

Not one of my favorite Ridley Scott movies so with me he has a lot of leeway and grace.

I've never seen Blade Runner, and at this point, I'm beginning to think I missed the age window of when I'd really appreciate it. I waited too long to watch Indiana Jones, and ended up disenchanted. I waited too long to watch the Princess Bride because I always confused it with the Princess Diaries, so all of the Mel Brooksy humor just fell flat for me. And I just don't have the desire to pick this one up any time soon...

I'd prefer to believe that this is some amazing movie I've never seen rather than watch it and discover that it doesn't live up to the hype...

@Spock0Clock

Age Window? This movie is incredibly beautiful, it has timeless special effects (This is still one of the best looking film in history) and this is a mature film with a philosophical background. It is a really good movie but you know, don't have any expectations for anything, just enjoy.

Yeah I would continue this without Ford. Make in the future of this world like 50 years after the events of Rick. Rick is a legend or some shit and just do a new twist. I'd be terrified to try to re-make anything from the original hahahaha

I don't envy this guy.

@LuisFcknLorenzo Agreed. @Spock0Clock Just watch it with the mindset it's a damn good 80's sci-fi flick. You'll notice a lot of films since then have references to this film.

@spideymania26 - you're not alone there. I had never seen Blade Runner until last weekend where my local cinemas played it as part of the Pop Culture Sunday Session they sometimes do. I found the pacing and actual plot / story quite boring and tedious but the film itself looks absolutely stunning. For a film made in 82 (am I correct?) it looked as though it could've been made less than 10 years ago. It is honestly one of the best looking movies I have ever seen.

Ever since I saw this at the cinema back in 82 Bladerunner has been my all time favourite. I've always had mixed feelings about a sequel and the msin reason I wouldn't have it is that Deckard should not be in it. I don't want the film makers to clarify the mystery of whether he is or isn't a replicant. I just feel that when any character of any film with all the theories and mystery surrounding it, like Deckard, is explained we always end up being let down. And yes, I believe Deckard is human. But that's all part of it's classic roots not really knowing for definite - how many other films these days can boast that it is true classic?

@kakinurmawth and I liking the fact of Ford coming back, It confirms that Deckard is not a F-cking replicant.

@GetsugaTensho22: The Final Cut,is the definitive version approved by Ridley Scott.

Dude is an awesome director. You guy's should check out a movie called Incendies. He's also got another sci-fi movie called Story of Your Life coming out next year with Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.

When I saw Blade Runner back in 82 myself and a couple of friends were the only people in the theatre. And despite having to wait 25 years for the definitive 'Final Cut' I'm still glad I saw it as it was then.

As always, hoping for the best now that we can't escape this sequel but I am pretty sceptical.

And @ThePowerCosmic, you have excellent taste in SF.

I'm a little worried for this sequel,it'll never capture the look & feel of the original.
