The new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, stepped on set today for his first full day of filming as production begins on series 8 of the hit BBC show. 10.2 million tuned-in on Christmas Day to get their first glimpse of Capaldi in one of TV’s most iconic roles in the festive special ‘The Time of the Doctor’, which saw Matt Smith hang-up his bow tie after 4 years in the role.

Capaldi was revealed as the Doctor in a live BBC One show in August, after months of speculation about the next Doctor’s identity. Arriving on set in Cardiff to begin filming, Peter Capaldi said: "New job, first day, slightly nervous. Just like the Doctor, I'm emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world." Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, added: "First the eyebrows! Then, at Christmas, the face! Coming soon, the whole Doctor. In the Cardiff studios, the Capaldi era begins."

Accompanying the Doctor on his adventures will be companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman. The first episode of series 8 has been written by Steven Moffat with the second episode penned by Phil Ford. These are the first episodes that Peter will shoot and are directed by Ben Wheatley. Ben Stephenson, Controller of Drama Commissioning, said: "Excitement and anticipation fills the air as Peter Capaldi’s Doctor takes control of the TARDIS for the very first time today. It’s going to be one hell of a ride and I can't wait for the journey to start."

Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One, commented: "A new year, a new face, a new Doctor! 2014 has arrived and it's Peter Capaldi's time so let the adventures begin!" Filming is taking place in Cardiff until August 2014. Doctor Who is executive produced by Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin, and produced by Nikki Wilson and Peter Bennett. It is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One.

Even though he is wearing Matt Smith's outfit in this pic...I hear the BBC will release a photo of the 12th Doctors real costume tonight.

As for jeans. 8th Doctor Paul McGann's character wore blue jeans later in his adventures. Of course these are the audio adventures so you dont actually SEE the jeans...but you do on the CD case at least.
Just look up Doctor Who: Dark Eyes

Everyone's gonna [frick]ing kill me for saying this but could somebody please explain to me what the heck Dr Who is about? All I know of it is that some dude with a weird screwdriver flies around and time travels in a phone booth or something and when he dies changes forms into some other dude.

@MPS2001

You pretty much nailed it. Alien in a time machine that also can go anyWHERE not just anyWHEN.

He has adventures righting wrongs and fighting aliens throughout space and time.

The show has been around for 50 years...but it got canceled in 1989 and came back in 2005. I suggest you start with the revival. No need to begin all the way in the black & white era.

Its a brilliant show. But it is a bit odd at first. I strongly suggest you check it out on Netflix.
And dont give up after just 1 episode. Give it a chance.

@MSP2001 He's a character called the doctor and he is a timelord of the planet gallifrey, he's about 1000 years old now and yea every time he dies he regenerates into a new body but he also had minor healing properties as well. He has two hearts, a sonic screwdriver that can mess with technologic equipment and a TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space). The timelords watch after all of time and space and own tardis' and the doctor originally took an outdated model and escaped Galifrey to go on adventures. The camouflage feature was busted so that's why it looks like a 1960's police call box. Including Capaldi, there has been now 12 different doctors (14 to be technical).

It was on BBC from 1963 to 1989 I believe and was rebooted/continues in 2005 with a new doctor. The story in between that time is revealed that another race called the Daleks (the enemies of the time lords and everyone, really) wanted to take out the planet and a war was brewing. The war was so bad it wiped out each race and the Doctor is the last known Time Lord, continuing to go on to help anybody that needs it throughout space and time. He also picks up companions which are usually always hot women. Hope this helped!

Is the tag for this going to get changed? This isn't Peter in his Doctor Who costume. It's what Matt as wearing when he regenerated. Change the tag or take it down. Don't post fake information.

@Dandy I know thats why I said continues as well. I only meant reboot in terms of new doctor, new companion and a newer background story they made up in between the gap/a fresh start to gain new viewers, although I guess I didn't word that properly lol.

I'm hoping Capaldi brings a more classic vibe, blended with a little more Eccleston Doctor, and a lot less Tennant/Smith Doctor... and several of my female friends who loved the last few seasons are already screaming heresy about the new "old man" Doctor.

Capaldi is a committed Dr Who geek and he brings bags of experience and gravitas to the show.He might even get me to watch it now and then.

Couple questions-
In the old series did they ever show a regeneration scene ?
Also- there's a debate as to the numbering of the docs, isn't John hurt a retconned first doctor? And that would make the new guy 13(?) so where do we get 14?

CAPALDI IS THE 13TH ...THERE'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A 13TH BUT I THINK WHEN CLARA BEGGED THROUGH THE CRACK TO SAVE HIM.....REGENERATION EVERGY WAS SENT TO HIM GRANTING HIM ANOTHER REGENERATION.
