Recently screenwriter Josh Zetumer handed in a 175-page screenplay he created for "Dune" to director Peter Burg, who is responsible for "Hancock."

It is now being reported that Peter Berg and his Film 44 production company will no longer direct the film. It isn't clear as to whether Berg dropped out or not. There seems to be two directors at the top of the list who can potentially replace Berg as director as reported by Den Of Geek...Neil Marhsall most known for his horror hit "The Descent" and Neil Blomkamp, who is responsible for the dark horse of the summer; "District 9."

Dune has a production budget potentially of $175 million. Several sites are reporting that each director has a great chance of taking over the director's chair but Paramount wants the director to have at least a past box office smash on their hand. If that's the case, Blomkamp made "District 9" on a budget of $30, with some of his own funds along with the help of Peter Jackson. The film went on to earn over $115 million at the box office domestically, with a foreign take of nearly $70 million.

"The Descent" had a production budget of £3.5 million pounds but earned $26 million domestically and $31 million foreign.

Whispers668: If those two directors are at the choices Paramount must choose from and the matter comes down to who earned more at the box office and could handle a larger production budget, I believe Blomkamp may have the upper hand. I enjoyed both movies but "District 9" was phenomenal.

@Teabag

The funny thing with that movie, I've heard so much about it. I think I even have the film but never took the time to watch it. Now that one more person has talked about it, I'm going to check it out this week if I have the chance.

I noticed some of the better films seem to be direct-to-DVD. Not saying all films utilizing that route are good but some are definitely better than the crap I see green-lit for theatrical releases each year.

Only one woman survived, it was depicted that the others died. Her last encounter with the friend who betrayed them showed she broke the friend's leg, which left her unable to walk, therefore being attacked by the creatures...I figured that was the only ending. Let me find out that each region sometimes receives a different theatrical ending. LOL. That's quite interesting really. How did it end there? That's weird because the sequel picks up directly when she exits the cave and is "forced" to go back down to figure out whether she was hallucinating or not. So if she died in your region, how will they open the sequel over there?

@ Tea: the original ending was the last girl staring at the cake, alone in the cave after her daydream. The re-edited shitty ending from the theaters was when she saw her dead friend in the car and screamed...they just cut the last 5 minutes citing it was more "hopeful".

I think a Dune movie would rock so hard, I even thought the ones they had on the SCIFI (not syfy) channel were great.

The remake series on Syfy was great, I dont' think this needs a reboot.

the scifi channel series did indeed rock, both dune and children of dune were done exceedingly well.

Spock / Guardian - The reason they were so good was because they were MINI-SERIES (and even they didn't get it all right)! A property like 'Dune' CANNOT fit into a 2-hour film, there's just too much stuff (think 50 pounds of [exctrement] in a 5 pound space)! Unless the studio is planning to break it up into smaller pieces (aka 'Lord of the Rings'), I forsee another epic big-screen fail for the Herbert masterpiece!

It's a shame, really...
