Guillermo del Toro Has Yet To See 'THE HOBBIT'; Acknowledges Help On 'PACIFIC RIM'

Director Guillermo del Toro was once in line to direct "The Hobbit" for Warner Bros. but that didn't work out and fellow director Peter Jackson returned to helm the prequels. So why hasn't del Toro seen "An Unexpected Journey?"

If you were going to direct a monumental, blockbuster film but things didn't pan out and someone else eventually went on to direct something you'd already put considerable time into, wouldn't you be curious about what that other director did? Apparently, Guillermo del Toro has no curiosity whatsoever. While discussing "Pacific Rim" with Vulture, he revealed, "I haven’t seen [any footage of] the second [Hobbit] movie. I haven’t seen the first movie, so I don’t know. I’ve been busy making my own movies. [Laughs.]" Do you think del Toro's just a tad bit bitter and is actively avoiding the project or has he really been that busy?

Del Toro was much more open about "Pacific Rim," willing to admit that his director friends, Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) and Alejandro Iñárritu (Babel, Birdman) helped with some of the editing on the film. Said Guilermo, "Alejandro famously came over one night on 'Pan’s Labyrinth' and took fifteen minutes out of the movie. And they both came to see my cut of 'Pacific Rim'. Alejandro took about ten minutes out of it with me. Alfonso also took a few minutes out but mostly gave ideas on editing — move this, move that. I watched [Cuarón’s] Gravity recently and came up with a few visual gags and helped him edit a few minutes out." Perhaps del Toro's director's cut will be released on home video.

There's even a question asked by Vulture pertaining to the widespread destruction in "Man of Steel" and balancing that with the smaller, human stakes. Guillermo responded by stating that it was not his intent to make a dark film with "Pacific Rim." "I think the thing that is going to surprise a lot of people about Pacific Rim is the thing that I hope surprised some people about the Hellboy movies," said Del Toro. He continued, "It has a good sense of humor. It has a very, very sweet nature. I said from the beginning, I’m going to destroy buildings and cars, but I’m not gonna see people being taken or destroyed because I don’t want the audience to ever abandon the idea that this can’t be fun."

"When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse."

@Levi: As far as balancing substance and style, I'd put him at number one or two. Best in the biz though? No. That title goes to Steven Spielberg. Spielberg has had that title for between thirty and forty years.

@Crossbones- I have to disagree, sorry, Spielberg is a very good director but I think the best in the biz is Martin Scorsese, this is only my opinion though hehe.

I tend to prefer Scorsese over Spielberg, but Spielberg definitely knows how to please a wider audience than Scorsese.

The movie was a spectacular guilty pleasure that's more or less stolen every bit of fire from that Godzilla film that's in the making. I've not seen such heavy handed out beat-downs to any creature since King Kong took on three T-Rex's. DelToro is the master of creature conflicts!

And if the idiots who moaned about the destruction level of collateral damage in Man of Steel still haven't come of their high horses, then they're gonna loose their marbles when they see how much shit gets frakked up in this movie!

Pacific Rim was a fun turn-off-your-brain movie. It fully delivers Giant Monsters vs. Giant Robots with some gratuitous Ron Perlman. The battles are spectacular. There is just enough plot to justify the rest of the movie (but the plot is not all that remarkable).

Biggest downside? there are a couple of scientist guys who are supposed to be comic relief, but I found them really annoying.

If you can, see it in IMAX for the bone-rattling sound -- this is definitely a film that will be better in the theater than at home.
