Colin Trevorrow surprised Jurassic fans all across the globe yesterday when he announced that he would be debuting a new Jurassic World short, titled Battle at Big Rock: A Jurassic World Short Film, on FX this coming Sunday, September 15.

Following the announcement, Trevorrow sat down with Collider to talk about the top secret project and revealed exactly what it's about.

"Battle At Big Rock is a short film that takes place one year after the events of Fallen Kingdom. It’s about a family on a camping trip to Big Rock National Park, about 20 miles from where the last film ended. There have been a few sightings, but this is the first major confrontation between dinosaurs and humans."

The film will run eight minutes and was shot in five days in Ireland last winter with a small crew and the principal cast, which features André Holland (High Flying Bird), Natalie Martinez (Death Race), Melody Hurd (Fatherhood) and Pierson Salvador (Gotham).

Also, despite the smaller budget, it will absolutely feature dinosaurs, including a pair that have yet-to-be-seen in any of the movies. "There are two species we’ve never seen before. The Nasutoceratops, which is a beautiful herbivore that feels like a Texas Longhorn. And the Allosaurus, one of the most iconic dinosaurs of all time. This one was a juvenile in the last movie. She’s all grown up now."

Speaking more on how the idea for a short film set in the Jurassic universe was initially conceived, Trevorrow says, "Universal asked if I’d be interested in making a short film and I didn’t give them any time to reconsider. I wrote it with Emily Carmichael, who is co-writing Jurassic World 3. It felt like a first step into a larger world after the last film. You have these animals loose in an unfamiliar environment, they’re disoriented, struggling to adapt. The first people they run into are bound to be camping. I wanted to see that."

Trevorrow directed the short, utilizing a script he wrote alongside his Jurassic World 3 co-scribe Emily Carmichael. Larry Fong (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) served as the cinematographer while Amie Doherty (Legion) provided the score.

The short film will be made available to view online immediately after its television premiere on Sunday.

@L0RDbuckethead - cinematography alone in FK puts it ahead of Jp3 for me...I don't like a single thing about that one.

@MrCamw1 - Haha it was honestly like watching 2 completely different movies. But like I said, I didn't hate Fallen Kingdom. I can suspend my disbelief enough for another illegal dinosaur trafficking story.

Both it and Jurassic World are good popcorn movies, IMO.

I get the feeling that this will be good just out of the fact that it didn't need to be made. Makes you think it's more of a passion project. Then again, it is written by the woman who wrote Pacific Rim: Uprising.

Then again again, I really like this video with her in. That doesn't really mean anything for the quality of her writing but I just wanted to put it here.

Woah, Natalie Martinez is in this?

OK, I might have to watch this after all.

No chance does an entire year pass before the first major Human Dino Confrontation. They were released in an inhabited area.

@continuezero - They were released from a very, very isolated mansion. Any amount of time could've passed between the opening of the door and the shots at the end of Blue overlooking a suburb. This could be the first time that those involved lived to tell the tale.

Why am I making excuses for this? I don't know.

@MadKingCipher @Nebula - There is no applying logic to Jurassic World. I gave up 10 mins in when the old guy quotes John Hammond from JP2 creating what I like to call the site B paradox. For me this movie falls into it's so bad it's good category. That clone girl at the end, being responsible for 10's maybe hundreds of deaths is hilarious.
