Colin Trevorrow Talks JURASSIC WORLD; Reveals Returning Cast Member

Colin Trevorrow sat down with IGN recently for an exclusive interview where he discusses the upcoming blockbuster Jurassic World and confirms the return of a cast member from the original 1993 film. Come check it out!

Late last year, Jurassic Park actor, BD Wong teased a possible return for his character Dr. Henry Wu in the upcoming Jurassic World when he tweeted this in response to a fan question about him reprising his role:

Well now it looks like we might have just gotten confirmation of his return through an interview with director Colin Trevorrow. He had this to say about Wong's character in an exclusive interview conducted by IGN: "...there is a character from the first film who makes sense in our world. This hasn’t been announced yet, but BD Wong will be returning as Dr. Henry Wu. He had a much larger role in the original novel, he was the engineer of this breakthrough in de-extinction. He spent two decades living in Hammond’s shadow, underappreciated. We think there’s more to his story.

Trevorrow knows that many fans were hoping for the return of Sam Neill's Dr. Alan Grant, Laura Dern's Ellie Sattler, and Jeff Goldblum's Ian Malcolm, but said he wouldn't want to trivialize their return as he has too much respect for the aforementioned actors just to have them appear for brief cameos. "I know a lot of fans want to see the original characters back. They’re iconic. But I respect those actors too much to shoehorn them into this story for my own sentimental reasons. Jurassic Park isn’t about the bad luck of three people who keep getting thrown into the same situation. The only reason they’d go back to that island is if the screenwriters contrived a reason for them to go."

Trevorrow says the toughest part so far was getting the script right: "There are a hundred different ways to tell any story, finding the right one takes persistence. Jurassic Park movies don’t fit into a specific genre. They’re sci-fi adventures that also have to be funny, emotional and scary as hell. That takes a lot of construction, but it can’t feel designed. The characters have to be authentic, the situations real." He doesn't reveal any plot details, but does acknowledge the extensive time spent on the script, which ultimately led to postponing the film's release. "...The process got easier when we decided not to rush to meet that 2014 release date. There just wasn’t enough time. Steven Spielberg had the foresight to make that call, the studio was supportive, and I couldn’t be more grateful."

Even though he doesn't reveal anything about the plot, he does share a few details about how the film will look: "We’re shooting 35mm and 65mm film. We’re also using an aspect ratio that hasn’t been seen theatrically in a very long time. The movie will be presented in 2 to 1. It’s basically a middle ground between 2.35 and 1.85. It allows us enough height to fit humans and dinosaurs into a single frame, without giving up that sense of scope. It’s very close to the ratio of the digital IMAX screens, so it will look great in large format."

When asked about how his film differ from the original trilogy, Trevorrow said this: "I’m not on a mission to separate this film from the ones that came before. That will happen naturally – I have different instincts... This film will have a lot of new ideas in it, but I think the spirit will be familiar. It will have an old soul." He also goes on to talk about Chris Pratt's character: "He’s a classic hero in a very modern context. He’s the guy who will get you through the jungle alive – but like Malcolm, Grant and Sattler, he’s an expert in a scientific field that’s connected to our story. The character allows us to explore some new ideas about our relationship with these animals, without losing the humor and sense of adventure."

So, Dr. Wu is the villain of the piece?

I always thought it was wrong that Hammond survived the first movie, after his creation had killed so many. The book had him getting eaten by those little compy dinos, if I remember right.

My main complaint with the JP sequels is that they never fully took the concept back to the mainland, except for the finale of TLW:JP, which seemed tacked on and was oddly played for laughs.

I would love to see a Jurassic Park movie set in Theme Park central, like Orlando or Anaheim.

Well he died in the Novel but was never showed he died in the movie. So I would be okay with him returning. I would also like to see Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum return too. Plus the character of Tim would be great to see again. Joseph Mazzello is still an actor and it would be interesting to see how he would run the company compared to his Grandfather.

Thank you!! I've been wanting the original cast members to be back in some degree, but this quote proves this guy knows what he's doing. Don't bend over backwards to justify bringing the old crew back, just continue the story as fluidly and smoothly as possible. Too bad JJ Abrams couldn't have this same mindset with Star Wars.

Dr. Wu did have a much bigger part in the book, so if they depend on that for inspiration for the character, I'm all for it. This movie might actually be good!

Everything said here is promising, even though it wasn't all that revealing. I assume everyone working on this is aware that the JP series got progressively worse to the point of unwatchability so I doubt they are getting back into just to continue the trend.

Why does Jurassic Park need to be funny. Did he read the novel? Because if not go and read them. I love the JP films but the two books are better. Plus if those became a movie they would have been R instead of PG-13.

I really want to see new dinosaurs. I would love to see a Troodon. Scientists say they were the smartest and very dangerous dinosaurs. Plus I really hope the Tyrannosaurus will not be in the movie but the Giganotosaurus instead. The G-Rex was more dangerous then the T-Rex. Plus I want to see like I said new Dino's instead.

Jurassic Park was the best movie of the trilogy. Simply amazing. The other two weren't even close. The Lost World was entertaining, but flawed. Jurassic Park III was just terrible in almost every facet of filmmaking. Awful. So hopefully Jurassic World returns the franchise back to the heights that the first Jurassic Park reached.

As for humor, all three of the previous films had their share of humor. Why change it now? None of the movies were strictly faithful to the novels, so it makes no sense to suddenly try to match the tone from the books all of a sudden.

I'd want the T-Rex to return, because it really was the hero of the 1st movie. Jurassic Park III made the colossal mistake of killing it off and making it seem like a wimp. I'm almost 100% confident the T-Rex will make a triumphant return here, along with a bunch of new dinosaurs as well.

I would have liked to see Sam Neil or Jeff Goldblum back but if it doesn't fit with the story then its not worth it. Glad that Dr. Wu is coming back, he was a pretty big part of the first novel but he only seemed to be in the movie for about five minutes. Maybe he'll explain why there was a spinosaurus in the third movie.

Bring back the original cast in a pre-credits scene where they're all asked to fly back to Jurassic Park. Here's the script:

______

Alan Grant: NO.

Ellie Sattler: (laughing) There is NOT enough money.

Ian Malcolm: Absolutely not. And stop calling me. You-- you-- you people are insane. Go away.
______

There.

As much as I am disappoint not seeing original characters this shows he care about characters not just throw them for sake of it. Colin seem care about fans so he was listen to what we wanted and even no he seem he like them in film because he would like them in like us just wouldn't fit story and screen writes didn't put them in. He put my nerves at ease so I looking forward to this next movie. He gave a good reason that only I need to hear.
