Images from Entertainment Weekly's Summer Movie Preview for Jurassic World have surfaced and we finally get a look at some of the other dinosaurs that'll feature in the highly anticipated Universal picture. Along with the new stills came some intriguing details about the film's plot and its two lead characters.
New franchise star Chris Pratt (Parks & Recreation; Guardians of the Galaxy) will be playing Owen Grady, an ex-military man who's living on the island studying the raptors. The other lead Bryce Dallas Howard (Spider-Man 3) will be playing Claire Dearing, the park's operations manager, who when attendance at the park begins to falter comes up with the brilliant plan of introducing a genetically modified dinosaur, the Indominus Rex, as a means to boost attendance. Of course, this man-made monster gets loose and wreaks havoc all over the park coincidentally the same weekend Claire's nephews are visiting. As for the dynamic between Owen and Claire, some of which we caught a glimpse of in the recently released clip, Trevorrow descibes their relationship as: “They don’t like each other at all, and by the end that’s changed, we think that [classic conceit] absolutely can apply to a dinosaur movie.”
Trevorrow also briefly teased a scene that pays homage to the iconic rain scene, where we saw the T-Rex make her debut, in Spielberg's original 1993 classic. We've seen photos of the gyrosphere in action as well a photo or two of it after it was destroyed by something big. “There’s a ride at the park that allows you to get into a gyroscopic sphere and be out in the wild with dinosaurs and travel beneath them—and that goes horribly wrong. Imagine being inside a sphere and then suddenly it breaks and you’re rolling like a cat with a ball of yarn.” After that, Claire goes full Ellen Ripley as she joins forces with Grady to rescue and protect her nephews.
“We have seen that we will repeat our mistakes if there’s money on the table, it’s not about the danger of playing God. These animals are real, and they’re on our planet.” says director Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) when explaining how the film relates to the original trilogy. Trevorrow was initially considered a surprising choice for the directing job, having only directed one other feature prior to tackling the iconic dinosaur sequel, but based on everything we've heard from him and everyone involved with the production, as well as the unwavering faith put into him by producers Steven Spielberg & Frank Marshall, the franchise seems to be in more than capable hands. Here is him signing off: “There are a lot of people in my generation who dreamed of being filmmakers who would love to have this job, and I feel a responsibility to all of them to make this everything that we all wish it could be, if I can pull that off, that’s my gift back to Steven."
