J.K. Simmons Reveals Some Intriguing KONG: SKULL ISLAND Details

MTV caught up with J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man, Whiplash) on the Golden Globes red carpet and asked him about his role in the new King Kong prequel(?) film that's in development at Legendary Pictures.

MTV's Josh Horowitz actually managed to get a few new details on Legendary's Kong: Skull Island from Golden Globe winner J.K. Simmons when he spoke to him on the red carpet the other night. It seems this movie won't only take place on the prehistoric island of the title, as the Whiplash actor reveals that it will, at least partially, be set in Detroit in 1971! “It’s where I grew up,” he told the site, “and we’re going to shoot in Detroit during baseball season, so I’ll get to go to Tigers games. There’s a lot to like about [making] this movie.” That's obviously set many years after the original story was, so this clearly won't be a prequel to the Peter Jackson's King Kong. Are we looking at another reboot? Beyond that, Simmons doesn't say much, but he is full of praise for director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who he describes as “passionate and so smart [with] such an interesting new take”. Here is the vid, which also includes a brief snippet with Michael Keaton, though he doesn't give away any details.

Hopefully this is a reboot and it sets the stage for an eventual Godzilla vs Kong remake.

I forget, is this supposed to be the same universe as Edwards' Godzilla?

"New take" must mean reboot? Right? I really liked 2005's King Kong. Ah well...

There are huge sound stages about 40 minutes outside of Detroit. I got to see them build that recent Wizard of Oz movie. Entirely closed sets.

This sounds like a reboot to the reboot. King Kong '05 was an awesome flick. I was looking forward to a prequel to that...

It can still be set in Jackson's Universe, just 40 years after. No need to panic just yet. Besides, the cast sounds fantastic.

Wait people actually thought this was going to be a prequel? Kong's dead. It's probably going to be his offspring or something, who'll probably end up being bigger then him. They could easily make up a story line like this and IF they want to build up to a King Kong vs Godzilla , they could pull it off. Anyways I'm looking forward to seeing what they do.

You guys know that Gareth Edward's Godzilla is 100x's the size of King Kong right?

The fight/film would be the dumbest thing imaginable.

Another reboot? I actually liked the Peter Jackson remake of King Kong.

I do have to say that JK Simmons and Michel Keaton has me looking forward to this movie.
