MAN OF STEEL Director Zack Snyder Has Big Plans To Rapidly Expand Netflix's REBEL MOON Franchise

Zack Snyder's time as part of the DC Extended Universe reached an abrupt end in 2017, but the filmmaker has now shifted focus to creating a Rebel Moon Universe, and you can learn more about his plans here.

Zack Snyder has bold plans for the Rebel Moon franchise, and they extend beyond just the two movies we know are coming to Netflix.

Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com) recently caught up with the Man of Steel and Justice League director, and revealed where exactly he'd like to take the sci-fi franchise. "When I pitched it to Netflix," Snyder recalls, "the scale was a thing they wanted. They were like, ‘Well, how big could it be? How many movies?'"

"That made me go, 'Okay, if we really do this, we can sink our teeth pretty deep into this. We can’t really hit the bottom.'"

Apparently, Snyder wrote a 450-page Rebel Moon "bible" which expands on the world's lore and backstories of specific characters and groups. The filmmaker has even created a timeline which goes well beyond both sides of these movies, suggesting he's looking to continue exploring this property for years to come.

For example, Rebel Moon won't even take us to the titular moon! "The Rebel Moon is not the moon that they’re on," Snyder confirms. "The title was conceptual, but there’s a planet named Vanna, and Vanna is the rebel moon. It’s not even in one shot of this movie!"

Accompanying these comments is a first look at the robot character played by Anthony Hopkins. Revealing he'll be called Jimmy, Snyder says he's a "wild card" who is "on a journey of self-discovery."

Brought to the planet Veldt by the villainous Imperium, it sounds like the robot will have a change of heart as the story progresses, likely making him a crucial part of the lore Snyder is attempting to establish with these movies.

Rebel Moon is set to be released on Netflix on December 22, 2023.

NETFLIX is perfect if youre an actor or director after bank. make a crap movie? who cares! terrible reviews? who cares! not sure itll generate ticket sales? we dont have to! so put some big name in a movie which has barely a script and then get a sequel, and another if youre lucky.

@iceballsreborn - That isn't quite true. While box office and reviews are fairly meaningless, viewers aren't. If your movie is not only expensive but doesn't pull enough eyeballs (however Netflix calculates such things) then you aren't getting a sequel, be it a movie or a series.

@Kozmik -
The numbers you have to generate on Netflix pale in comparison to getting people out of the house and into a theater. It's a whole different ballgame.

@Goldboink - That's neither here nor there because they're different metrics. What is relevant is that getting a movie, series or sequel on Netflix has conditions that must be met and if you don't meet them then you aren't getting a followup.

This man has missed his calling. Outside of Man of Steel (a criminally underrated film) his foray into superhero films has been terrible and I am not sure there is an appetite for a Star Wars type Netflix epic. Believe it or not, his best avenue (the franchise he was perhaps born to lead) is at Warner Brothers in Mortal Kombat. It would have given him the license to make R rated ultra violent content which he excelled at with 300 as well as weave into it adult themed story elements. His style would have contributed to the films looking epic and his approach to fantasy in realistic looking settings is exactly where Mortal Kombat needs to be set. Again Warner Brothers misses the mark when it comes to connecting talent to where a persons creative strengths lie.

@Forthas - I'm a Snyderfan, and I have to admit, you make a great assertion.

@TheDarkLastSonKnight - You see it too, right? Mortal Kombat is off to a "meh" start and I think Zack Snyder could have infused some real energy and vision into the franchise. In fact, it would not be a bad move marketing wise to gain some (if not all) of his fanbase back to WB's side by making amends with him and putting him in charge of the Mortal Kombat IP.

@Forthas -

I highly doubt WB even wants to deal with him and his cult.💁

@AmazingFILMporg - I think he has a good relationship with Michael DeLuca and Pamela Abdy. I also think there are still remnants of the old regime that probably don't want to deal with him but business is business. I think the people who blindly follow Snyder are delusional but at the same time they do make valid points. I agree with them that DC should not adopt the silly joke filled comic book tone that doomed films like Shazam. I disagree that Snyder's gloom and doom tone is the way to go. I agree with them that Snyder was done dirty and Warner Brothers should be open to Snyder being part of the DCU, but I disagree with them that Snyder should lead the DCU/DCEU. I would not mind him continuing a Man of Steel trilogy as long as someone else writes it.

I don't really understand this franchise approach. A lot of studios amd streaming services have planned multi-media IP franchises, while I haven't seen a single one yet.

Think the same thing should apply here as for all the others: gotta see what the reception is to the first one before building out.

I know nothing about Rebel Moon but I am super interested in checking this out. I’ll judge whether I want more after I see the first installment. Snyder’s great with the visuals so I expect this to look amazing. Let’s hope the story is engaging as well.

As much as I have came to generally despise Snyder's stint with DC, I'm still interested in seeing how this turns out. Cast looks fun and I'm really loving some of the practical/makeup effects you're getting with the alien races. (or at least the one Snyder shared a bts photo of)

That apparently Zach Snyder wrote a 450 page bible for Rebel Moon makes me really wonder if it's going to be worth watching because Snyder isn't a good writer.

@Kozmik -
That wife of his convinced him that he's the next George Lucas or some such. His best work was a page by page film of the graphic novel 300. He's a glorified cinematographer is what he is.

It's really kind of sad at this point. Someone he trusts needs to tell him he stinks. An intervention maybe.

Kozmik - 7/5/2023, 4:09 PM
@Goldboink - I agree and what's worse is that being a good cinematographer is awesome. That's not to imply I have anything against multi-hypenates, it's just that Zach Snyder is not a good writer.

Wonder how much he plagiarizes George Lucas in this just to call it his own. Granted a lot of properties are derivative, but this feels like a straight rip off.
Kozmik
Kozmik - 7/5/2023, 8:33 PM
@inkniron - If I recall both 'Rebel Moon' and 'Star Wars' are based on the work of Akira Kurosawa ('Seven Samurai' and 'Hidden Fortress') so plagiarism isn't really an issue, besides, there're relatively few new ideas under the sun.

What concerns me is that Zach Snyder isn't a good writer.

It doesn't matter what's he's supposedly mimicking.
