RIDDICK Director David Twohy On An R Rating, Rebooting And A Director's Cut

Pitch Black is a fan favorite film that many still look favorably upon. The Chronicles of Riddick is a film where many feel the franchise jumped the shark. Director David Twohy talks about getting back to the series' roots with Riddick.

Riddick David Twohy

Talking to Total Film Magazine, the director of the upcoming third installment in the Riddick film franchise talks about what fans can expect from Vin Diesel and co. in the film.

On the importance of the R rating in the Riddick film series.
Twohy: If you make it PG-13, then you have to make concessions, and that's what happened on The Chronicles of Riddick where we had to downplay a lot of our action sequences and remove a lot of the blood. We found it was tying our hands, so we vowed not to do that.

On where the series was headed if The Chronicles of Riddick had been a financial success for Universal.
Twohy: Had Universal said to us, "let's roll over, let's pick it up right at the end of the last movie" and funded it, we would have ventured into the Necromonger underverse and we would have had a big The Lord of the Rings-style movie on our hands. But That didn't happen, so cleverly Vin and I got the rights back and produced it ourselves on a smaller scale. That said, it still looks like a big movie. I think the audience will see the tip of the hat to Pitch Black, but they won't feel claustrophobic.

Based on previous statements it sounds as if Riddick could get additional powers. Is that true or is he just more dangerous?
Twohy: The cryptic answer is a little of both. Sorry for being coy but I', already projecting ahead to the theatrical cut versus the director's cut and thinking about what I may re-include.

There's more from Twohy in the article including discussions about IMAX, and if Kate Sackhoff was cast because of her role in Battlestar Galctica. Twohy also goes on to say that rebooting after The Chronicles of Riddick would've been turning their backs on the fans. The latest issue of Total Film is out now, pick up a digital copy or print at your local retailer.

Riddick hits U.S. theaters September 6th, 2013.

Man this sounds awesome. Seems like a labor of love so I believe it will be the proper follow up to Pitch Black. Thank you Universal for passing on this, I love my R rated movies. No water please.

I loved the Directors Cut of Chronicles of Riddick. When I heard that they were finally doing a third movie, I had high hopes because the end of CoR left many possible angles for a sequel. Then when I found out Riddick, the leader of the universe, is going to be stranded on a planet with aliens, my hopes went down the drain. While Riddick may make the fans who hated CoR happy, the fans who loved CoR may want to see Riddick do bigger and better things.

COR wasn't that bad... wasn't perfect either. Pitch Black was one of those Gems that came out of nowhere with no expectations. Not unlike the Matrix, and Iron Man. So follow up expectations are usually not where they should be. Its like trying a drug for the first time, then trying to surpass that high the second time, which never happens.

Its sounds like they want to make it what its supposed to be, where Universal just wanted to make money over a great movie. Whats awesome is that UNLIKE FOX, Universal aren't sitting on the Rights.

Chronicles was so much more than I was expecting from a Pitch Black sequel. I dug it. Looking forward to 3.

CoR wasnt bad, it just had a completely different feel tha PB. I loved PB. CoR wasnt bad, but felt like they were taking the franchise in a direction I didnt expect. It was like a completely different universe. They went from character traits/costumes that were very close to our own, and then CoR showed us something closer to far fetched fantasy.

Also another point to add, Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury was great in further explaining the events that occurred between Pitch Black and CoR. If you havnt checked it out I would suggest it.

Love all three existing Riddick adventures. Cannot wait for this one.
The haters are always going to find a way to put down something many people like to "even the odds" to appease some twisted sense of balance. At least this place isn't dictated by some nonsense "everyone has an opinion" mantra that allows the boards to be nothing but bandwagon after bandwagon.

BTW- Who is this "many" the headline reads of. Most people I found that were put off by COR usually don't come off as very good fans anyway.

The only reason Chronicles wasn't good in may fans eyes was cuz it took a big left turn from "Pitch Black " it looks like they went back to then basic for this one

Pitch Black was great & introduced a great fictional cinematic character in Riddick.
Chronicles was cool but the PG-13 rating did hurt it..R-rated is the way to go.

I grew up on badass R-rated action films..too many candyass PG/PG-13 movies because they are chickenshit studios.

I liked chronicles a lot but did not like the directors cut. I thought it took away from the mystery of Furians to reveal so much in the directors cut and the result was kind of hokey. Looking forward to more adventures.

I didn't like Pitch Black that much, Chronicles is a much better movie, I've never understood what some people didn't like about the movie?

Pitch black was very different hence why I liked it, the sequel just went the typical way of Hollywood, lets just make money. In saying that the sequel had some good scenes but the script was too weak to act as a good sequel, when one compares it to the Alien vs Aliens.

I am looking forward to see if they will make a good film.

Give me Chronicles over Pitch Black.

Chronicles is a much more fleshed out movie, Pitch Black seems like a low budget B movie to me.
