Since Disney brought LucasFilm, Star Wars has been in the news with rumors and wonderings about the new trilogy Disney announced. A renowned art critic called Camille Paglia recently but out a book called Glittering Images. In the book she reviews and analyzes 29 works of art throughout art history. In the book's final chapter, Paglia makes a very big and bold claim saying that George Lucas's Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith is the greatest work of art in recent memory.

Paglia was interviewed with Vice, where she was asked why she felt this stood out among other artworks from artists like Matthew Barney, Rachel Whiteread, Chris Ware or Peter Doig. Paglia explained that, "The long finale of Revenge of the Sith has more inherent artistic value, emotional power, and global impact than anything by the artists you name. It's because the art world has flat-lined and become an echo chamber of received opinion and toxic over-praise. It's like the emperor's new clothes -- people are too intimidated to admit what they secretly think or what they might think with their blinders off."

Paglia continues on saying how Episode III epitomizes the modern digital art movement, more so than other work of art from the last 30 years. "I had considered using Japanese anime for the digital art chapter of the book, but it lacked the overwhelming operatic power and yes, seriousness of Lucas's Revenge of the Sith."

Well everyone is entitled to their opinions. No one should be hated on and scorned for their opinion no matter if you agree with it or not. What do you think? Do you agree with her or do you think another movie or work of art is more worthy? Comment below. Peace.

Like it or not, Revenge of the Sith is by far the best looking Star Wars film IMO. Watching it on Blu-ray is just incredible, especially when the sound is turned off... :P

One of my favorite Star Wars film. I thought it was great! I wish the movie had a larger budget so it could have looked more realistic.

Check out this awesome trailer for the movie using the music from The Dark Knight Rises!

I love 1-3 as they were my first exposure to SW. Dont get me wrong they arent perfect but there is alot of really annoying shit (Luke, Chewy's constant ear shattering warbles, amd C-3P0 in general) in 4-6. People have their nostalgia glasses on a bit too tight when it comes to Star Wars and its resulted in a snowball effect of negativity towards the prequels

She's entirely right.
The same thing is happening in the geek community, too. It's slowly becoming an echo-chamber of recieved opinion and toxic over-praise.
Deal with this, echo-chamber: Hulk is a really good film. Spider-Man 3 is profound. The Dark Knight is a cheese-fest. Echo that, bitches.

Sorry, if Sith is art, then so is daytime drama.

Guess it's a matter of taste.

I thinks she's making a point about how art, in the sense of traditional "high art" (galleries, shows, etc.), has become an exercise in public masturbation, moreso than that ROTS is actually a work of art.

Context, people.
