STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Showrunners Fired Mid-Production; THE MUMMY Reboot Director Alex Kurtzman To Take Over

After Star Trek: Discovery’s initial long string of problems, things had seemed to be going well for the series. Unfortunately showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg have been fired for misconduct.

After a rocky road through development hell, Star Trek: Discovery has won the hearts of both critics and (some) fans. With its steller makeup and a talented ensemble, CBS is hoping to garner awards attention for the show, especially with Sonequa Martin-Green’s commanding performance as Burnham.
However, it seems as though the show has struck trouble once again.

Showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts have been fired and replaced because of their unreliable leadership skills, rather than the typical creative differences scenario. Furthermore, The Hollywood Reporter claims that the duo was abusive to the show's writing staff, with many of the writers feeling uncomfortable working on the science fiction series. Thankfully, this has come to an end, with The Mummy (reboot) director Alex Kurtzman taking on the mantle.

Having worked with the Star Trek: Discovery crew before, Alex Kurtzman is a very recognizable name in Star Trek's media history. In addition to being one of the co-creators of the show, he has also written Star Trek Into Darkness and 2009's Star Trek. Even though he has had a few fumbles in his career (The Mummy, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2) his experience with Star Trek as of late is at the least comforting. As the director of the show's pilot episode, it is no doubt that he is familiar with how to command a ship.

Honestly, the worst parts of the Star Trek film reboots have been their scripts... just dumb as a brick. So I don't take his involvement as a huge plus for the show either.

But then again, I've yet to watch any of it. How's it doing for CBS's streaming service? I don't know anyone personally who has it.

@Chewtoy - I'm curious about the business side of it, too.

Outside of a very select list of truly great Trek episodes (and Wrath of Khan), I think Discovery was the best Trek has ever been. It balances the dumb action impulse of the reboot with a healthy helping of the Roddenberry stuff with something like DS9's overall tone. It's an awkward mix sometimes, but probably the best that could be done in this vein.

But with Kurtzman involved, I'm preparing to bail.

@Chewtoy - I don't think it's the scripts so much as the plot. The scripts themselves have a lot of heart and decent dialogue. The problems to which you are referring are more core concept problems. They're more fundamental than the script.

@BackwardGalaxy - Very true... I object to the story beats and contrivances, not the dialog. I find the first two reboot films to be poor stories carried by the charisma and chemistry of a talented cast aided by a solid director... but if you actually stop to think about what’s happening in either of them, it’s just total nonsense.

Well abusive people who lack leadership skills shouldn’t be in leadership roles and should lose their jobs so cool. Luckily even if I’m not a fan of all his past work I do love those two Star Trek movies.

I liked some aspects of the first season quite a bit, but I'm really not sure I'd even want to continue watching from the point they left things at the end.

Damn, I was enjoying the break from Trek's usual formula. Predicting from "KHAN!" to future scream "KURTZMAN!"

I haven't seen the show and don't plan to. I don't like the way it throws Trek canon in the garbage and doesn't keep the universe visually consistent like the other shows did.
