J.J. Abrams Explains Why He And Kasdan Took Over Writing Duties On STAR WARS

While participating in a conference call for his new Fox series Almost Human, the director shed some light on the reason why he and Lawrence Kasdan stepped in and took over from Michael Arndt to write the script for Star Wars: Episode VII.

During a conference call with fellow Almost Human EP J.H. Wyman, Abrams talked about the decision to replace Toy Story 3 scribe Michael Arndt on Star Wars: Episode VII script duties along with Empire Strikes Back co-writer Lawrence Kasdan. “It became clear that given the time frame and given the process and the way the thing was going that working with Larry in this way was going to get us where we need to be and when we needed to be,” explained the Star Tek Into Darkness director. “Working with Michael was a wonderful experience and I couldn’t be a bigger fan of his or adore him more, He’s a wonderful guy and was incredibly helpful in the process.” So, they felt he was working too slow then basically. Abrams concludes by saying that although he and Kasdan will be writing the first of the 3 new Star Wars flicks, it's entirely possible that Arndt will work with them again in the future.

So to my eyes and ears it sounds like that they didn't scrap his script, but they are simply finishing it for him. I guess Arndt was struggling to figure things out, and Kasdan had already formed his own ideas, so they went with Kasdan.

I am confident that the film will be good. And I am glad Lucas is deciding to sit out these films.

@PantherX It'll come out in the Fall or Winter, which is fine because the summer is crowded enough as it is.

I'm not watching this, anyway. Star Wars was killed a long time ago. Disney's just come to put the nail in the coffin.

@REPOMAN Yeah I know. I'm just saying Lucas was NEVER a great writer, even in the first Star Wars movie there were some cringe-worthy moments.

JJ is a good writer (it's mostly his buddies that get ripped for their writing), and although Kasdan has written a good film in a while, I think having him involved (with Irvin Kershner as well) is what made The Empire Strikes Back great.

You idiots don't pay attention, do you? The basic outline for the story that is gonna be used for these next 3 films came from Lucas. That was made clear when Lucas sold Lucasfilm, that part of the package was an outline for the next 3 films. Mark Hamill said that Lucas contacted him about appearing in it several weeks before he sold the company. And there have been stories about Lucas being used as a consultant, at least a tiny bit. I would even bet that part of the deal was an agreement that certain things can never happen (for example, completely rebooting it is probably out of the question, or creating rebooted prequels that conform to whiny fanboys' expectations.) So all you Lucas/prequel haters need to shut up already. Without Lucas, there would be no Star Wars, and probably no CBMs at all, at least not with the effects we expect now, because without Lucas there is no revolutionary ILM.
