Joe Johnston On J.J. Abrams Directing STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

Before Abrams was selected as director, many Star Wars fans wanted director Joe Johnston to direct the next installment in the franchise. Here's what Johnston had to say about Abrams getting the job.

Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) worked on all three of the original Star Wars films at the start of his career and even designed the look of Boba Fett. While primarily speaking with the Huffington Post about the directors of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand the conversation naturally turned to Abrams. Does Johnston support the director of Star Trek helming a Star Wars film?

"J.J. Abrams is the perfect choice to get the third trilogy off the ground. These films are big logistical nightmares to direct, like any $150 million plus project. They're like military operations in the attention to detail required while trying to retain a grasp of the big picture. J.J. has more than proven he can handle the pressure, plus it doesn't hurt to have a guy at the wheel who has produced, written, and created shows of his own. If anything he may be overqualified", Johnston joked.

There's some interesting and candid discussion from Johnston about Kershner, Marquand and George Lucas in the full interview so click the link below if you're interested in reading. Too bad, the subject was Star Wars, I'd love to hear Johnston's thoughts on the Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

I agree, I think Abrams is a great choice. I don't know why people are so worried about the lens flares from Star Trek making an appearance in Star Wars. If I'm correct, I believe Trek is the only movie Abrams used lens flares, so I doubt he'll use them in Star Wars. He'll deffenitly leave them out, since he'll want to keep the two movie styles seperate.

jj abrams star wars = epic, [frick]ing fantastic, orgasm inducing intro followed by a drawn out, head scratching middle and a wtf rushed ending. (i'm looking at you fringe, alias, lost, felicity, revolution, alcatraz). I hope damon lindelof writes it too. that would be the icing on the cake that chokes all star wars fans :P

I don't really get all the hate for J.J. Abrams. The guy makes good shows and movies. Like Joe Johnston said, he's written, produced, and directed. Lost was cool, Star Trek was dope, what's the problem?

Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston's concept art in the Art of Star Wars books, one of my most endearing memories growing up in the early 80's.

A true inspiration.

Abrams and Johnston are both terrific. Obviously Star Trek and Cap get a lot of attention, but I really like Super 8 and Wolfman. Some really cool directing in those movies.

I like Joe Johnston as a story teller however he sucks gigantic rhinoceros balls when it comes to directing action. There wasn't one imaginative or epic battle scene in Captain America(no wonder Marvel didn't invite him back). He failed miserably when it came to bringing a modern day Wolfman to screen (I mean how hard is that). They should allow an up and coming sci-fi director to handle this gig.

I agree with Johnston, I think Abrams is a great choice. Can't wait to see what he does with it. And Johnston is responsible for creating Boba Fett? God bless him, and give him a chance to make a Boba Fett movie. Now, THAT would be epic.

@Claire: Hell yeah dude!

@Cipher, @Gusto, and @Kamen: lol, nice work

i agree..jj's over qualified. as long as lucas's still around and closely involved, the franchise don't really need a NAME director. both empire strikes back and return of the jedi proved this.

jj's better off directing the justice league movie.
