Just as it's been confirmed that a new Star Wars trilogy is in the works, centering on Daisy Ridley's Rey's attempt to restart the Jedi Order, actor John Boyega is now changing his stance on returning to the franchise.
During Star Wars Celebration 2023 this past April, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy described the new trilogy as, "Well, we’re 15 years out from ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ so we’re post-war, post-First Order, and the Jedi are in disarray. There’s a lot of discussion around, ‘Who are the Jedi? What are they doing? What’s the state of the galaxy?’ She’s attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the books, based on what she promised Luke, so that’s where we’re going."
The new trilogy will be directed by Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel).
Boyega recently sat down with Tech Radar to promote his highly-touted, upcoming Netflix sci-fi comedy, They Cloned Tyrone, but inevitably, the topic of Star Wars arose.
In the past, Boyega was particularly critical of how Finn's story arc ultimately played out from Episode VII to Episode IX.
Back in August 2022, Boyega stated, "At this point I’m cool off it. I’m good off it. I think Finn is at a good confirmation point where you can just enjoy him in other things, the games, the animation. But I feel like ‘[Episode] VII’ to ‘[Episode] IX’ was good for me."
Then in March of this year, Boyega told The Times, "I feel like the arc that J.J. tried to tie up, that’s where I feel comfortable with the release of [Finn]."
Now, Boyega is now on record as being officially open to returning to the Star Wars franchise. It's likely he's already been in touch with key personnel at Lucasfilm regarding his return for the next trilogy.
Boyega even walked back some of the above comments.
"That [those comments] was a few years ago, so they were the subject of that particular project. But I'm open to all characters and scripts that are enjoyable, have a great cast attached, and a terrific director. So yeah, I'm open to all opportunities."
Rey will reportedly not be the main star of the new films but will instead play a supporting role- similar to Obi-Wan Kenobi's position in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.
