In E. K. Johnston's new Star Wars novel, Queen's Hope, we learn a surprising (you could even say shocking) detail about Emperor Palpatine and the Force Lightning he unleashes. Turning to the Dark Side and becoming a Sith opens the door to powers the Jedi can only dream of, though it also takes its disciples down a path that leads to what might be best described as pure evil.

While we've seen Palpatine wield a lightsaber, it's become apparent that he most enjoys using Force Lightning. The Rise of Skywalker even saw him let loose with a Force Storm that brought the Resistance's fleet to its knees. So, it's clearly a powerful tool, but there may be another reason why the Emperor prefers to wield this specific Dark Side power when battling his many foes.

In Queen's Hope, we see a number of key moments from Palpatine's perspective, including one that takes place shortly after The Clone Wars begins. Furious, he returns to his sanctum and uses Force Lightning on a Sith relic meant to absorb that energy. The suggestion is that unleashing this power is akin to an emotional release, and one Palpatine has no doubt become somewhat addicted to.

The fact that Palpatine's rage has built to a point where he can only control his temper by using Force Lightning this way adds a new dimension to these powers. It also explains why an evil such as this one would turn to that rather than his lightsaber as it allows the Emperor to quite literally let his anger flow through him...and lay waste to those who dare try and stop him (like Mace Windu and Luke Skywalker).

It's also interesting to think about what this means for the Sith that don't use Force Lightning. Count Dooku did, of course, but Darth Vader and Darth Maul were never shown utilising that ability.

"Force Storm?" Sounds cool. Then again, maybe it wasn't since I can hardly remember anything from The Rise of Skywalker.

Vader and Maul didn't use Force Lightning for reasons.

Maul was still very much an apprentice and hadn't learned how to yet.

Vader is a cyborg. Something like 75% of his body is mechanical. It wouldn't bode well for him to have lightning channeling through his body. He would basically destroy all of his mechanical bits if he used it.

@CorndogBurglar - Maul actually did use Force Lightning in the Phantom Menace video game. (Yes, I know it's not canon)

This is akin to saying the only way I can control my rage is by punching the crap outta something. I’m sure some folks will consider this interesting “lore”, and more power to you if you do, but I’d say it’s just another case of over explaining something which never needed more explanation.

Palpatine having anger issues? Didn't expect that.

Anyway, and speaking of palpatine, I really enjoyed the Rey vs. Palpatine fight and dialogue in the new Lego Star Wars game a lot. Knew the Lego-fying of the sequels would actually make them bearable, and above all fun

I don’t read books don’t have time so what is everyone of classic characters going to have explaination how what they do things for now in books?

The novel for Revenge of the Sith gave a pretty interesting take on Vader as basically feeling hollowed out and gave the impression he would never reach the force potential that he would have had he not sustained those injuries.

Probably not considered canon at this point, but i thought it was an interesting idea. Could be why he never reached the point of force lightening.

I have always assumed that Darth Vader didn't use Force lightning because it has to be channeled through living tissue, and Vader didn't have hands to channel it through since both had been cut off and replaced by artificial hands. And I would assume that he never did reach his potential with the Force after losing so much of his body, which would have included the loss of a lot of midichlorians (yes, I know most don't like to hear about midichlorians, but they're canon, and they actually provide a good explanation as to why Vader never became as powerful as the Emperor. They also provide a good explanation as to why Darth Maul also never became as powerful as the Emperor since he lost half of his body to Obi-Wan's lightsaber. Even if you don't want to use midichlorians as an explanation, Obi-Wan says that the force is an energy field created by all "living" things, and so the metal and wires in Vader and Maul wouldn't contribute to that energy field since they aren't "living.")
