ROGUE ONE Originally Only Killed Off One Main Character; Young Leia Was Set To Have A Much Larger Role

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story went through a lot of changes during the transition from page to screen, and some new details have now been revealed about Leia's original role, the team's survival, and more.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story writers Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz recently took part in a live Q&A, and thanks to The Direct, we now have more details from their chat with IGN

According to the writers, multiple endings were considered for the film, and there was one version where the only member of the "Rogue One" team to die would have been K-2SO. He was set to go out in a blaze of glory on the beaches of Scarif, the original location for much of the movie's final act (it's likely the team's survival was shot given what we saw in the trailers for the film).

Reshoots resulted in a lot of changes, though, and both Whitta and director Gareth Evans reportedly wanted to kill off every member of the group from the start. Disney disagreed, but when Weitz and director Tony Gilroy later came on board, they shot the ending as we now know it.

During the same interview, Princess Leia's surprise appearance at the end of Rogue One was also touched on. Initially, she was set to have a larger role in the film (like the CGI recreation of Grand Moff Tarkin), and the writers have her scenes in both the Rebel base and its War Room. Instead, it was decided that her appearing right at end of the movie would have a much bigger impact.

As a result, it was Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso who delivered that big speech in the War Room scene.

Oh, and going back to that sequence on Scarif's beaches for a second, Whitta and Weitz also confirmed that while Jyn was stealing the Death Star plans, Darth Vader would have been trying to get to her by mowing down Rebels below. Needless to say, that would have been awesome to see!

@Unites - same, I still call it the best star wars fan film but it's still cool.

Yeah R1 has turned out the best of Disney Star Wars.

But about Jyn Ersos speech...I mean yeah...why was she allowed to even make a speech. It really doesn’t make much sense that she should be telling the leaders of the rebellion what to do.

@IronGenesis - Yeah I always thought that was the weakest scene in the film. Like why would all these veteran soldiers even listen to this random person they've just met.

So I just watched the newest Clone Wars episode and holy shit. Ahsoka's descent to Mandalore was the greatest [frick]ing minute ever. I've watched it on loop, like, twenty times now.

@Nebula - Can't wait to see it later tonight. Have been waiting for this finale since 2013!

@Nebula - I watched the descent scene. I thought it was interesting that Ahsoka didn't actually directly kill anyone on the way down. She sliced their weapons and jetpacks but never directly killed them.

I don't imagine it's a censorship thing because the clones were killing tons of Maul's forces directly. But I thought it was interesting that Ahsoka doesn't seem to kill anymore.

@Nightwing1015 - isn't that part of her character now?

@adamcawa - Not sure, that's why I found it interesting. When did she decide not to kill? I must've missed that arc.

Also, it's kinda pointless because if you cut somebody's jetpack in midair you are essentially killing them. You're just letting them fall to their death in fear for 15 seconds instead of killing them quick.

As many changes as this movie went through, it's crazy how awesome it turned out.

Gareth Edwards directed the film initially not Gareth Evans. Gareth Edwards also directed Monsters and Godzilla 2014 film. Gareth Evans directed "The Raid" films.

Nothing could have saved this film. It was a story we didn’t need and it added absolutely nothing to the cannon.

@Twenty23Three - a story we didn't need, kind of like Ep. 7,8 and 9. Yet is still the best Disney film in the SW universe.

honestly the second best movie outside of the original trilogy

i think having the characters all killed off added a lot of weight to what the rebels were doing. even thought a lot of pilots died in a new hope, the weight of their loss was never really there. i think rogue one honestly kind of serves as a retcon in that respect, if that makes sense. (and does a good job of it)
