Simon Kinberg Updates On STAR WARS REBELS

The executive producer of Star Wars Rebels fills us in on what we can expect from the tone of the upcoming Disney XD show, revealing that although it'll be a "fun and character-driven story", things will also get, you guessed it, dark at times.

In an interview with EW, Star Wars Rebels executive producer Simon Kinberg discusses various aspects of the new animated series. He's asked about specific characters (Darth Vader, The Emperor etc) and although he refuses to confirm or deny their presence, he does say that "the main characters are new characters". One thing Kinberg is happy to talk about is the tone of the show. It seems they'll be taking things back to A New Hope for the "intended voice" of the series, and although we can expect a fun adventure, it sounds as if they won't be afraid to get a bit grittier than the likes of The Clone Wars for example.

"The world we're creating is an Imperial world. You're seeing the impact of the Empire, of stormtroopers around the galaxy, abusing and oppressing people. Thematically and politically, it goes to some dark places. But for the tone of the show we took our cues from the original movies, which had fun and adventure and swashbuckling with emotion and grounded human characters. We took all our cues from the original films. Obviously there are slight tonal differences between New Hope, Empire and Jedi. But I think the closest intended voice of the show is A New Hope. So there are places where we get into darker backstories, there are places we see how cruel and malevolent the Empire can be, but for the most part it's a fun and character-driven story. Again taking our cues from the original films, it's less maybe political than the prequels and more personal. It starts with a few character introductions that will precede the show. I wrote the first two episodes, they're like a one-hour story across two episodes where we introduce the main characters in the show."

Sounds great to me. There's much more to the interview so be sure to click the link below to take a look.

Balls....miss read this. Thought it was about the new movies. Either way, I think this will be a decent series.

good, thats what i want to hear, the original trilogy was character driven and fun but still had stakes and dark moments, the prequels just had bad dialogue, bad acting, bad characterization of Anakin, political mumbo jumo that was uninteresting and bland and Jar Jar, hopefully guardians is also fun and character driven but has stakes and drama to it which from what i have heard is exactly what it is going to be

MY TWO BIGGEST ISSUES WITH THE THREE PREQUELS:

Anakin wined alllllll the time in the last two prequels,
and Jar Jar Binks....I mean what was that about....?

It's funny how he keeps stressing that they "took cues from the original movies" . They just want to remind us all that the prequel era is OVER. "This is like the movies you all love" so shut up and watch.

I loved the Clone Wars, But I think I'll love this just as much. I'm really interested to see the main heroes. I'm hoping there is at least one character that gives off the same Gunslinger vibe Han Solo gave in the Original series.

I understand having new hero protagonists, but this show should really use Vader (and sooner than later). I'm still excited to see what they do with this, but I don't understand the seemingly reluctance they have in using the greatest movie villain of all time. I'm not sure if it's fear, or some sort of stupid mandate, but they need to get the [frick] over it.

@ABH1979 Could you imagine losing to these guys every week without killing someone? Although I want to see Vader, I think it's a good idea to limit his appearance.

I just want to see him (and hear him), even if it's just on the bridge of a Star Destroyer, or something like that. Hell, he can be the one dispatching this Inquisitor, on the Emperor's behalf, to hunt down the Jedi that he's to busy for.

I agree, it should be limited, but his presence must be felt, and it should increase as the series progresses. If we don't at least have one scene with Vader and/or Palpatine, by the end of the first season, then I'll be really disappointed.

@ABH1979 We agree on that. I want him to be in one or two episodes a season. I wouldn't mind seeing him in one episode where he kills someone on the Ghost's crew, now THAT would make his presence felt.

Exactly. As far as action goes, they shouldn't overuse him, because when he's on the scene, it should be devastating for the opposition.

Still, to start, Vader can and should be a bit of a boogeyman.

I wasn't around to fully appreciate ANH. As a little kid, I thought it was kinda boring. Obviously, maturity and a nauseating amount of re-releases have solved that.

However I just can't help but feeling a bit of climax denial at this news. I hear about this an my kneejerk reaction is "AWESOME!!" and then I think about all of the bleach-white linen robes, hairbuns, the hideous orange rebel jumpsuits, the bushleague spaarti clone Stormtroopers who couldn't hit the broad side of...well...anything, and I go "eh, maybe a little less awesome"

Although it will be interesting to see just what remains intact/gets inserted from that era in EU. I'm also a bit curious to see who among the jedi actually survived the Purge...besides Mace, cuz ya know, CLEARLY he survived the 100+ story fall from the Chancellor's office and was in a bacta tank "healing" when the order first came down *sarcasm*

I REALLY hope that the powers that be redeem themselves for the travesty they called Boba Fett during CW. That shit was just awful.

Maybe I'm just still hurt at CN's decision to cancel Season6 of CW. I think it's coloring my expectations of this series.

What is meant by, "it sounds as if they won't be afraid to get a bit grittier than the likes of The Clone Wars for example"? I read it as the Clone Wars was not very 'gritty'. If that is the intended meaning, I beg to differ. For a cartoon series, The Clone Wars was very gritty at times.

It sounds like they're saying all the right things. Taking cues from the original films...finally. Hopefully it'll be good, and at least incorporate a few brief nods from the EU games/novels.

As for Vader, I think that he should be an ominous presence the lords over the galaxy, but not a regularly-appearing character. There is plenty of room for good Star Wars storytelling that does not involve him directly.

I think Vader should definitely appear every once in a while, and James Earl Jones needs to provide the voice. The prequels jipped us of seeing Darth Vader in all his glory hunting down the jedi. I'd love to see him pop up every now and then like Sidious did in The Clone Wars. His fight with Maul and Oppress was amazing. Vader should be like that on Rebels.

I just got done watching the last episode of the Clone wars and its sad that disney felt the need to cancel something so successful like that but i think they want to get the audience prepared for episode 7 by having this new show taking place during the imperial rule instead of the clone wars. I for one prefer the clone wars cartoon over the prequels
